MrPryMinista, nice post. Even if that's not what I thought when I tried to interpret the lyrics myself, I'm going to go with you on this one, as it makes a lot of sense to me. Also, the pretentiousness of humankind in general seems to be the resonating theme. Like an adult telling a child that he is not invincible, we as a race often suffer the same mindset. |

This is a song that I'd love to see annotated by Simon. It's such a visceral song that evokes a very colorful story, but I'm sure it's chock full of metaphors, which I can't quite place. I do know it grabs me in the gut every time I listen to it and it's my favorite song from this particular album. |

I see it as him cheating on his love with another girl. The love of his life works all the time and is not there, and when the opportunity presented itself ("It came up unexpected, I had to follow through"), he gave into temptation and convenience and had an affair.
Deep stuff which I can relate to. No matter how much you love someone, there is always going to be that time of longing for attention or a passionate embrace which time has stolen from you. |

Just an observation that's illustrated perfectly by this song- it's interesting to me that sometimes the most poignant lyrics are not classically poetic or overtly cleverly composed, but straight-forward and thought provoking. A simple string of words such as "They were born and then they lived and then they died." has more effect on me than anything else in this song. Simple truths that are easily overlooked, when thrown into the spotlight can resound so intensely. |
