While I can’t say exactly for every line, I believe the song is about how naïve the world in general is, and how blind the government is to suffering. “Tearing out all these open pages” could be the denying of history and not learning from it. “Millions of men with blank faces” would be rulers or people with the upper hand who turn their faces on people who truly need them. “Living lives just like deer in headlights,” “Terrified, blind, and wait to die” and “I wonder when they'll come get me” is the people who have no choice but to fall victim to said rulers/ones with the upper hand. These people are very vulnerable and stand no chance. I believe the “they” could be government or even Death itself, and the people realize one day they’ll be killed, and even dying may be a way out of their torment. “We want to, have to, need to,” “And we'll tell you when they're hungry again” is the want, have, and need for killing the world has, and also how it’s like an insatiable hunger. “It never ends…” basically explains itself. Big shot screaming, "Put your hands in the sky," is the government, the way I see it, wanting to see it’s people pray and ask for salvation. “He says, "Give it up boy, give it up or you’re gonna die, you'll get a bullet in the back of the neck, in the back of the neck right between the eyes" is once again, the government saying “Stop rebelling, and succumb to our power. There’s no point in trying to stand up to us, it’s worthless.” A bullet in the back of the head is an execution shot, thus ending any people who attempt to over-throw. |
