"Coke adds life" is another Coca-Cola slogan. I think the point in drawing the connection between the two cokes is to show that people buy them for the same basic reason - they have been tricked into believing it will make their lives more exciting. |

I like how it is song the second time with two voices overlapping. For me that indicates that the singer of the first verse has found someone who is just as insecure and easily absorbed in love. And that's a beautiful thing. |

| Dire Straits – Twisting By The Pool Lyrics

Yes, surely not one of their best. But I think that it should not only be pointed out that this is not only a tribute to 1960s rock n' roll [specifically surf rock], it is a sarcastic one.
To me, the references to going to the disco and reading about inflation suggests the late 70s Carter presidency era. But the inflation doesn't really matter to the "characters" in the song, as long as they can use a call box to contact their stock brokers.
In addition, they dance to Eurobeat, a genre of music Dire Straits was certainly never a part of, which caught on among kids vacationing in Greece and Italy [i.e. rich people].
To get to my point, I think this song is contrasting the audience that was drawn to the Beach Boys and other pop-rock bands [middle class white kids] and the twisters by the pool [vapid rich white kids]. |

I prefer the version on the bonus disc for Armed Forces. The studio version on This Year's Model is just too controlled, it doesn't seem as angry. |

| The Residents – Fire Fall Lyrics

This seems like a retelling of the story od Sodom and Gomorrah. to quote the ever-accurate wikipedia:
"Lot refused to give the visiting angels to the men of Sodom, instead he offered them his two daughters but the men refused. The men were struck with blindness, allowing Lot and his family, who were then instructed to leave the city, to escape. Then Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with fire and brimstone by God."
Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back at the city.
Why are there so few comments on Residents songs? They're such a great and weird band. |

| Tom Petty – Refugee Lyrics

I always thought it was about a person who sabotages her (or his) own success, either because she wants something to complain about, or she doesn't think she deserves any better.
I think this mostly because of the "somebody must have kicked you around some" line, which i took to mean that Mr. Petty is positing that somebody made the subject believe they are worthless.
P.S. I think Tom Petty is rated just were he should be. Isn't he widely accepted to be a highly respected and innovative performer / songwriter? |
