Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds to me like she's a pretty young/innocent girl (hence the 'still to young' part) and she's trying to prove to him how un-innocent she can be by doing him sexual favours because she loves him and she desperately wants him to love her back. However, this doesn't really work for her, because he doesn't want her sex, and just doesn't like what she's doing to herself in order to get to him, so therefore he doesn't feel the same and is somehow not satisfied by anything she does for him, because he's just looking for the real thing, real love, and his unsatisfaction is unpredictable and could hurt her, just like a volcano. But she keeps trying to please him, giving him miles of mountains, even though he wants the sea, and so eventually he has to just tell her straight out, which could explain the sort of outburst when he sings the bridge part:

What I give to you
Is just what I'm going through, etc...

The 'she's still to young to treat' makes it sound like that, because she is still very innocent (despite her attempts to prove him wrong), she seems to be only new to the whole game of love and sex and relationships, so he really doesn't want to hit her too hard for the first time, because he still doesn't want to hurt her, but doesn't want her to keep on wrecking herself to get to him, so he has to try and let her down gently.

Im not sure if that makes much sense to anyone, but it kinda reminds me of a situation that I'm currently in. The guy I'm interested in is pretty keen on me, but sometimes I feel like he's only in it for the sex, so i dont want to go as far as the girl in the song as to give him sex and whatever he wants just to try and get him to like me, because it would probably end up that he's still not satisfied and it would all be similar to the song, but I still want him and I just keep wondering what he really wants from me.

Gotye – Night Drive Lyrics 17 years ago
The favourite boy line threw me a little too...
i liked to think it was about a girl he loved, or even just a special girl friend. Maybe i'm just sexist.

He may be gay, i wouldn't have a clue. But i don't really think you have to be gay to write a song about a guy, even in an intimate way. I'm no expert, nor am i a writer, but i think that one of the greatest things about writing is being able to write using different perspectives, seeing from a different view, and being able to express the same emotion as if he really did feel that way about the guy.

This would have to be one of my favourite Gotye songs. It's absolutely beautiful, expecially the way his voice blends with the drums.

Gotye – The Only Way Lyrics 17 years ago
Fantastic song...
Reading the lyrics makes me think that its about saying goodbye to someone who has cancer or something of the like.
'The only way' being that she has to eventually die from the disease. It's so sad.
They both seem scared about the whole deal... but he's realised that the only way it's going to end is with her death, and he's trying to calm her down, tell her it's alright.
'The end of the journey’s in sight'. All the crap it's put them through is almost over - she'll die soon.

The only bit i can't seem to work out is:
All the things you thought
you came here for
Everything you thought
you knew for sure
No meandering
No more wondering
Everything is true

but im pretty sure if i work on it i'll find something.

It just seems to fit the whole cancer thing. Well the lyrics do anyway. Somehow it feels a bit too upbeat at the start to be singing about cancer =\ but when his voice comes in it saddens it a little.
Once again, great song. I love Gotye.

Emerson511... thankyou... i was readin everyone else's comments thinkin 'Uhh... i think they got it all wrong'

I agree with you, although perhaps not demons.
I'm thinkin more of a battle of self... trying to get control of your thoughts.

Evil thoughts are tryin to take control of him and he's trying to fight it. He's trying to stay clean.
It's kind of hard to explain but when i listen to the song... i love it... the message comes to me so clearly. Fantastic.. i love the whole album... it means so much to me.

meg;, lol you like my name? i love it. Colossal is my favourite song. Anyways, what you said about the 'she drank from the craft' line, i think you've got it pretty right.
But i dunno, we could all have it wrong. It's such a hard to song to work out, so much imagery and so it could be anything.

Wolfmother – Apple Tree Lyrics 18 years ago
ps. MascarasaurusRex, i like you too, im a HUGE fan of White stripes and Led Zepp too. I was reading your comment where you said 'I thought he said "he said"' It made me take a new perspective of the song, by changing the song from being in first person to being in third person. The message in this song is great, and remains the same if it is 'Nyssa', 'Dear Sir', or 'He said' I'm sure they change it between 'Nyssa' and 'Dear Sir' as they like.
Also reading what you said about the family tree thing, i reckon he got her pregnant, the guy in the apple tree story, i dunno if you were talking about Blue Orchid or Apple tree but i think they guy in apple tree got the girl pregnant.
Now that got me thinking how wolfmother may have based the story on the bible story, the two people being Adam and eve, and the devil becoming Adams father because he got eve pregnant. Maybe wolfmother were muckin around changing bible stories and made up their own! :)

and i hope im not being mean, you're brilliant! a great first comment. I got an account just to state my views on wolfmother. Hope i see you around more :)

Wolfmother – Apple Tree Lyrics 18 years ago
I have both versions of apple tree, the one where he says 'Nyssa' and the one where he says 'Dear Sir' I must say, i like Nyssa much better, it gives the song a much bigger meaning. Nyssa, the snake in the bible, represents the devil.
Zepprocker, i reckon you're right on, he had sex with the girl. 'Dear sir' sounds better when you look at it as though he had sex with the daughter, but Nyssa, meaning that he did something evil because, in the Adam and Eve bible story, Adam and Eve are warned not to eat the apple but they did because the snake told them to. But who said that both 'Nyssa' and 'Sir' reffer to both the Devil and the daughter's father.

Great song i love the line 'Unraveled some mystery in me'
Amazing
I wish i could tell wolfmother how much their music moves me and how much it means to me.
What amazing lyricists wolfmother are. :) They balance a great sound with emotional and important messages in their lyrics. A lot of their songs tell stories, i love it and if you took them away now, i would die without it.

Zepprocker, i like you, you rock and appreciate great music :)

Im not sure about the whole pagan thing, i think the whole song it just metaphorical and that he's comparing the girl he loves to a pagan. If so, the imagery and emotion of the song is absolutely amazing.

This song, like all of wolfmother's, blows me away every time i listen to it.

I think the line 'Make her an offer your fortune can be sold' talks about how all he can offer the girl is his love and his soul, and that's his fortune.

I dunno, i cant believe there aren't many comments on this. It's such a breathtaking. The flute is amazing.

I dunno, the pagan thing does make a lot of sense, maybe im just looking into it too deeply, i have a huge thing for metaphoric songs.

Wolfmother – Colossal Lyrics 18 years ago
Man this is such a strong song, in sound and in emotion. I guess all of Wolfmother's songs are, except for the few fun kinda ones like woman and lovetrain which the meaning is kinda obvious and they just enjoy playing it. Shows that they're true musos ;) Love it!

I think the song goes a bit deeper than being stoned or whatever. It reminds me a little of Vagabond. All their songs remind me of each other, they all connect in some way.

I think its just that it sounds like the kind of story they tell in Vagabond, how the person (in this case, the colossal girl) wants to escape from the world and someone has fallen in love with her and wants to go with her.

Anyway thats what it means to me, it could be anything really. I love the emotion and importance that wolfmother put into their music and lyrics.

ps. this is one of my favourites... hence my name ;)

Wolfmother – Joker & The Thief Lyrics 18 years ago
I reckon this song is about a lonely man who everyone loves and idles but he doesn't want just anyone and searches for the right girl... hence:

'See him sifting through the sand'

I agree that the 'There is always sweet in the sour' lyric tells of the man's life and how everyone thinks its great but he doesn't like it.

Then one day he finds the right girl, she was always there but he never noticed her, just thought she was another one of those people who take him for granted. But he falls for her and he just wants to take her away to live together and escape from the rest of the world.

I also agree that the lines 'All the people that he see in the night, Hold their dreams up to the light' talks about how people he sees just have fake dreams or even about his supposedly great life how it seems great but its really crap.

I think that the line 'We are not goin' home' backs up how he just wants to escape from the world with the girl.

and I think the Joker and the Thief is the man and the girl and they have sex one night.

Anyways just my thoughts nobody's brobably read it cos its so boring but yeah.. anyone agree with me?
