Elvis Costello – Everyday I Write The Book Lyrics 14 years ago
Elvis Costello did mention he wrote this song on a lark in about 10 minutes, but it's still such a great song. Probably better than he really thought.

To me this song really isn't about specifics of the relationship (like who is dogging who). This song is about the ins and outs and ups and downs of any relationship. They;re going through it together and no matter what, he still wants her, still love her, etc. The book is their life together.

Bill Withers – Just The Two Of Us Lyrics 14 years ago
I saw the documentary "Still Bill" about Bill Withers recently. Good stuff and so informative on the true Bill Withers and his life. Fascinating really. He states in the documentary that he wrote this song out of his frustration with the music industry. This song is actually about the music industry. Funny, since he recognizes that everyone thinks it's a romantic song.

The Beatles – Here Comes the Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
I know this song is about all the great things everyone else has mentioned... but ever since my daughter was born, I have automatically always personally thought of this song being about her. Her smile is perfection and I feel like I am looking at the sun whenever I see her little face light up.

Jeff Buckley – Morning Theft Lyrics 16 years ago
I definitely believe this song is about Elizabeth Fraser as someone mentioned, especially after reading about her. She has deep regrets about their relationship... as she said she has to learn to forgive herself. Fraser says how she regrets not being there for him, as she was constantly touring and busy. No doubt Jeff must have been wrapped up in his own business ("A kiss goodnight from every stranger that I meet"). Their relationship was described as a very personal intimate relationship--whatever level that may be. And she does have a daughter from a previous relationship. By the time Jeff died, they had drifted as friends. I think Jeff is saying how if he wanted that friendship back, he needed to send away all the things of life, the craziness of the music business, etc. to regain what he had found with her.

It's such a beautiful song. I am constantly floored at the sheer poetry of his lyrics.

Jeff Buckley – Dream Brother Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow, I had no idea that that was what this song was about. I guess it makes sense. However, I do want to comment that I feel when he says, "Dream brother", he's referring to his "brother" as though he is in a dream. This can be alluding to the depiction of the sleeping twins in the beginning of the song as opposed to dream referring to an "ideal". On the other hand, I feel like he could be telling his brother to continue dreaming. The whole vibe and music to this song is very dream or trance-like.

Foo Fighters – Walking After You Lyrics 16 years ago
More than it being about how hard it is to let someone go, for me it's more about someone's resolve to always love and not give up on the person... not give up on love. Doesn't every girl wish that their man would walk after them? Unfortunately, it's nothing but a pipe dream in most cases!

Feist – My Moon My Man Lyrics 18 years ago
After finally seeing Feist in concert, there is NOOOO way this song is about anal sex! It's clear that she is not that kind of person. In her own words, she said, "Let's keep it PG-13". No curse words even. Besides, even if it was about the naughty stuff, what does "My care, my coat" mean in relation to that? On another note, she is such a unpretentious, cute, and cool person! Really fun in concert and AMAZING live! The music and her voice was even better. Definitely, a must live.

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all, how young or out of it are you all who have first heard this song from Donnie Darko? This has always been my favorite TFF song.

I think basically this song is about a teenager falling for girl, but can't read her or get her to open herself up to him. I say teenager because he sounds like he's in between being a child and man. This song talks about the future in a way that seems to infer they are growing up. She's also a teen when he makes a reference to the "child in her face".

I think basically she's rigid and has reservations about getting involved with him even if she really is interested. I think this is addressed by the lines, "But traditions I can trace against the child in your face Won't escape my attention. You keep your distance via the system of touch and gentle persuasion." Furthermore, these "traditions" hold her back. Perhaps, it's not "proper" for her to get involved with boys at that age. He notices that the child in her complies with these traditions. I think she cues to him that he needs to keep his distance "with a system of touch", particular a system of physical cues. Maybe it's a friendly handshake as opposed to an intimate hug. "Gentle persuasion" may mean she also uses these polite physical cues to lure him, or maybe he can't help being drawn despite the politeness of the cues. He's slowly getting sucked in, whether he likes it or not.

"I made a fire and watching it burn
Thought of your future
With one foot in the past now just how long will it last
No no no have you no ambition"

This chick's got issues. He probably sees that she faces pressures but is stifled by her problems, while he sees all this potential in her. Maybe one foot in the past is not necessarily past problems, but that she wants to remain a kid in the past and doesn't look forward to being a woman.

"My mother and my brothers used to breathing clean air And dreaming I'm a doctor
It's hard to be man when there's a gun in your hand"

I interpret these lines to mean, he's talking about his own situation. There are all these expectations that he going to amount to something. It sounds like he is his family's only hope. At the same time, he realizes it's hard to fulfill these expectations and go down the honest and noble path, when there are easier ways to get money.

"And it's my four leaf clover
I'm on the line, one open mind
This is my four leaf clover."

THe four leaf clover might mean his love for her, but I actually think that it is his hope for the future or the philosophy that he has about her and his own life. He's open to the possibilities of life.
