Some of you are close, but no cigar. The important part of this song is being missed. It's about class. Maybe you have to be British to get the references. The working classes make up the bulk of the British army. They are trained to fight to keep the rich rich and the powerful powerful. In return - the young soldiers are told to consider themselves lucky to have a job under thatcher's regime.
Remember, Cromwell didn't just oppress the Irish, he oppressed the British too. |

i don't believe this song is really about ziggy. The fact that its on a "concept album" says nothing about what is really about. Bowie's not disciplined enough to have sat down and wrote a series of songs intended for a concept album, more liekly he would have had a rough concept and shoe-horned in a bunch of songs he'd already written, that would vaguley fit. Don;t take it too seriously guys. |

Wonderful song, recently covered by Marc Almond. It was part of my internal soundtrack when I first moved to London in the mid 80s. I too wanted "Bright lights, Soho, Wardour street" and
hoped to "make friends with the guys that" I met.
London disapointed. but I got over it, and I'm still here. |

he he. It does seem like homophobia to refuse to see what this song is actually about. Bowie was claiming to be gay at the time, and he has gone on record about what this song is about. It is about a gay couple, one of whom dances with a girl, and then hads to placate his boyfriend "John, I'm only dancing." nothing to do with cockney slang either :) |
