I'm with Mhorton and Inthemist. This song really speaks to me, as I'm from a very racially charged town. The pressure that comes to bear if you're in a bi-racial relationship is unbelieveable and it always destroyed the relationship and damaged the people involved - "Preaching my blame, Will our strength remain, If their power reigns?" This song reminds me of my generations struggle with the older generations to change things the status quo. So I guess you could say, I think this is about people struggling to make their ideals reality in a world they see as wrong, and how they shouldn't lose those ideals and become what they're fighting: "Let’s show them that we can Free our minds and find a way The world is in our hands This is not the end" |

| Based on the movie yes, but I reckon it's more about modern Western society's fear of, and obsession, with dying. Most cultures in the world accept death as the natural order of things, but not Westerner's - we do everything to deny our own mortality, including doing drastic things to stop the aging process. The thinking seems to be 'if I don't age I won't die'. How sad. | |

I think Borderline is right about it being a parent-child relationship. But I think it's a parent who's facing their mortality, probably retired and finding nothing in their lives now, so they're trying to regain some kind of relationship with their adult child. But it's clear she wants nothing to do with her parent. For whatever reason (work, selfishness) the parent was emotionally unavailable and distant during her childhood. Leaving her without a parent to help guide her through life - 'the cross'. There's anger there "why have you waited to embrace me" for the past and because the parent won't see that it's his/her fault their relationship is crap and that they weren't there for their child (where the lying and denying comes in). After all that's said and done though, she still wants that partental connection she always craved - "I’m still wondering why, I’m still calling your name, In my heart I still hope you will open the door You can purify it all, answer my call" A second interpretation could be she was abused as a child and her parent won't admit it, but still wants a close relationship her - ie wants her to pretend it never happened. |

The video for this song is about child abuse, and some of the bands proceeds are going to help the cause. I'm not sure I get that completely from the song. The lyrics sure, but the vocals and music don't imply anything I can relate with that. The vibe I get from this song's more about being emotionally damaged and letting a loved one go cos you don't want to drag them down with you. Yes, that can relate to the child abuse aspect, but it could also involve any type of emotional damage. Whatever, at least it's going to a good cause. |

I took the "time has passed you by" to mean they're beyond time now, it means nothing. What's great about this song is everyone can relate to it. Everyone's lost someone, and you can relate to the sentiments in this song and the beautiful vocals. I think this could be about a loved one who was terminally ill and "gave up the fight". The anger that can happen in cases like this - things can be said and done that you have to deal with after they're gone. I also can relate it to the suicide of a close friend, but as I said, multiple meanings apply to this. Whatever the case, can't go past this song! |

Mhorton I think you are definitely on the right track. As far as the references to her wrongs, I think you already answered yourself but I'll name the 2 reasons I think she says this stuff. One, a lot of religions claim that to question your faith is to put your soul at risk, which is one way of looking at it. Two, as in the line "I believed it would justify the means", I put it down to the things she's done in the name of following her religion, which she now realises were wrong. If you've ever met a self righteous Bible basher... well, you're very lucky :)... and it can be aggressive and down right abusive, and you're left wondering how their practices measures up to the dogma. Nice excuse huh - "God told me to go out and spread the word!" Yeah, but he didn't tell you to shove it down people's throats, and literally wipe out other races, cultures and beliefs! PS I'm not hating - I love my God! I just don't like people who try to force others into believing what they do. |
