Black Mountain – No Hits Lyrics 15 years ago
This one's a tough nut to crack.

No Hits is about as far away from the mainstream of Black Mountain's oeuvre as
I've heard, n00b as I am to their stuff. No Hits is also more open to interpretation than many of their songs; Tyrants for instance seems like it is not aiming for symbolism or multiple meanings--a great song but very direct.

No Hits starts off so disco-fied and synth-y compared to the other 70s/grunge/grind Black Mountain is so good at, which makes me love both their more typical material as well as this even more. A conscious effort at self-mockery? Mockery of others? Then it explodes like Gut Feeling.

No Hits could be:
No desire for a hit song (Holler/ against the pop star dream)
No hits on their website ("in the modern age", hey I'm the first one to comment on this AWESOME song)
No hits off the pipe (they work with homeless and drug-addicted folks according to Wikipedia)
No violence (terror terror) - ok I'm stretching this to make my point

But the "Making it in the Shade" bit - reference to the Rolling Stones album, yet another Stones compilation regurgitation?
"Have you been faking the sounds" - disillusion with the state of pop music?

Is it a lament that they have no hope for hits (won't you fall for me?), or a cry that they would never sell out for a hit (halt the dancing crowds)? But so many great songs are like this, hard to pin down, open to multiple interpretations.

I just want to get the ball rolling to see if anyone else can get the combination. A very simple song of few words but for me it raises nothing but questions.

So looking forward to the Seattle show November 29th!

I love this song because it seems at first glance to be a a novelty song or a parody of any old hump song from "Get Down, Make Love" to "Sexual Healing" but on closer read is about the boredom or entropy that sets into a stagnant relationship, leaving only the sex that is probably at the relationship's core. Again and again - anytime, anywhere pretty clearly says that there's good boot-knockin and plenty of it. Plus with its minimalist solo, killer drum fills, and harmonic overtones it's a sweet sweet take on that hypnotic groove Josh is so good at, and I like a lot of the really hard fast stuff he does too.

[I think the lyrics above are wrong, it's evil AND not evil EYE]:

"Don't understand the evil "and",
or how one becomes two"

Suggest to me that the singer has broadened their circle of lovers from one to two--her AND her. Continuing straight into:

"Can't recall just what started it all, or how to begin the end"

Means it's time to break up, but he can't (or doesn't want to) figure out how to start the process, which follows through in:

"Didn't come here to break it, just see how far it would bend"

is how far can the rules of the relationship give to allow other trysts without actually breaking up--ending the again and again.

I'm guessing "what I won't do" is get married, move in, make some kind of commitment.

"Sun and the moon" makes me wonder - I like SuperMutant's take, but it ain't "moon and stars". Something about "I'd be untrue" in that line seems to tie in - if I told you I knew about something, I would be unfaithful maybe. I also like the way the first line seems to conceal a deception -

"You wanna know if I know why - can't say that I do"

Like: yeah, I know why, but I can't say so, and thereby poison the well.

Really one of my favorite, most subtle songs by one of my favorite bands. Love the mocking, self-deprecating tone of the back-up vocals - Thanks, PJ!

I read on Amazon that Lanegan - god bless im - sang on this, but all the youtube videos (check em out, they're awesome) show the big ginger singing. It's miraculous, really, such a crooner, and PJ Harvey is
something else in that puritanical dress. So understated but the song is so much better for her contribution.

Pleeease come to Seattle in 07, came late to the party and haven't seen you live yet! Don't make me take a train to Eugene! [like I could anyway ...]
