Gang of Youths – The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows Lyrics 6 years ago
Discussing the track, frontman Dave Le’aupepe said:

“This song came about after I struggled with writer’s block for a year, barely managing to etch out more than a single verse of something awful the whole time. I was walking home across the Brooklyn Bridge one night, questioning my place in the world, contemplating giving up music and doing something more substantial. I sort of felt that I wasn’t doing anything that actually mattered. But I looked out at the skyline, all silvery and strange and in typical self-indulged frontman fashion, I began to revel in this moment of abandon, of self-hate. As a result, I think I stumbled across a kind life-affirming axiom; that in a cosmos potentially absent of meaning, and an existence devoid of objective value, I have an opportunity to invent my own meaning. We all do. We can ascribe meaning and value to our own lives and in a way, attribute great esteem and value to each other as a result.

All of us as adults, from youth to old age are drunk, stumbling around in the dark looking for a kebab. I’m scared and unsure, and I want to acknowledge this rather than repress it, or allow cynics to denigrate me because of it. So the song is about becoming more human, more aware and I guess in a way, more alive.”

Slow Runner – I'm Gonna Hate When You Go Lyrics 13 years ago
The title of this song betrays what I think is the real meaning, which is: please never leave, I love and need you. The line "I lie beside you fragile and exposed", seems to be where the title gets its thought. The idea that someone can make themselves so vulnerable to another person, so fragile and exposed, is quite romantic and loving. Isn't that what love should be like? A dangerous exposure of our true selves. I wish I had thought of this song.

The Lonely Forest – Turn Off This Song And Go Outside Lyrics 13 years ago
Great song from a Pacific Northwest band from Anacortes, WA. Remember that. They aren't from Seattle! I think this song is basically saying: Don't spend all your time doing....uh...exactly what I am doing here...interpreting music. Also, I think they are trying to get people to realize that it can be destructive trying to live in music vicariously, rather than actually going out and experiencing life. And that while they want you to enjoy and relate to their music, they also don't want to be worshiped or viewed as musical saviors. Plus, considering that the PNW is infamous for gloomy weather and suicide, this song seems to say: Get out of your mom's basement, find someone to love and the sun will come out if not in reality, then at least in your own heart.

Frightened Rabbit – Not Miserable Lyrics 13 years ago
This song speaks volumes to me, someone who has suffered from clinical depression and has been through a shitload of drama, pain and heartache, but who has conquered it for now. I love the way the author is so honest about his losses and his weaknesses, and is confident in his happiness and health now. Much art is distilled from pain. This song belongs on my life soundtrack.

Atomic Tom – We Were Never Meant To Be Lyrics 13 years ago
Song is self-explanatory, but it certainly strikes a chord with me (pun?) in that some relationships only work in parallel universes where things are slightly different. This song is about understanding that exact moment when you realize that love along is not going to save this relationship and that its time to accept it and move on. It doesn't mean you never talk to the person again, but that you move on.

The Jezabels – Sahara Mahala Lyrics 13 years ago
Some of the lyrics are off. I was just guessing on some of the stuff. I found this online and it seems to be closer. Sorry!

How long, its seems I've waited
I've walked a thousand, to see you to heaven, to see you, where heather grows
And I know - know you divide between bringing in the light, playing in the height of the sky
With sweet hope, and playing in the pools where the broken lines of your love meet
You take me on your shoulder, Sahara Mahala

And I know I want to be with you all of my days, on hallowed grounds
But, honey every time we go to gaol, the seeds of doubt come creeping
Just keep moving, on hallowed ground

Oh, good feling, it seems I've waited; the seed, the moment of completeness
Sahara Mahala, Sahara Mahala

I want to be with you all of my days, on hallowed ground
But, honey every time we go to gaol, the seeds of doubt come creeping
Just keep moving, on hallowed ground

And I get this in winter
Get these visions, visions
I get the feel you can kill these visions

I want to be with you all of my days, on hallowed ground
But, honey every time we go to gaol, the seeds of doubt come creeping
Just keep moving, on hallowed ground

The Gaslight Anthem – Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics 13 years ago
I love the added detail about the pub fights listed above. Actually, even though the phrase "Here's looking at you, kid" was made famous by Casablanca, I'm glad there is a bit of background as to its origin. Makes the song even that more interesting, as if the author is also ready for a punch in the gut as he lifts his glass. Bravo, man.

This song seems to take on more meaning the more girlfriends I part ways with. Because of mutual friends, their name seems to always be peeking around the corner waiting to find you vulnerable, and it always seems to arrive at the worst time. Some people, like the waiter in the diner, get it and sigh with you. The song for me reminds me of how stupid I have been to invest so much into some women, only to have them rip my heart out. And of course, in some cases, I simply moved on. But somehow hearing about their lives, whether good or bad, always seems to strike a heart chord. And thus, guys join rock bands and play until their fingers bleed and then get drunk. As was mentioned above, those names Janey, Anna, etc. could easily be replaced by other names. I think that is why this song is loved by so many people. Its not a happy song, but its a song of truth.

Mates of State – My Only Offer Lyrics 13 years ago
I'd agree with the above, about being about marital/relationship discord. Its almost as if they are simply sharing a home, waiting for the other to call it quits. I love the line about stifle copies of myself or someone else. Its almost as if they are wondering what kind of person the other is pursuing, someone similar to themselves? A copy of themselves, or someone else? Either way, they have to sweep it under the rug, stifle it, to keep sane.
Debating a life sucked out the energy. Sometimes giving up and cutting your losses is better than sticking it out, trying to make something out of an unhappy life.

The Jezabels – Sahara Mahala Lyrics 13 years ago
Sahara Mahala, essentially means The Greatest Desert Slum. I think its used symbolically here to represent the empty, barren feeling of missing someone who's far away, either physically or emotionally. Perhaps even someone who is dead.
There also seems to be a theme of anti-climax here. "I've walked a 1,000." "It seems I've waited...for the moment of completeness."
In short, I think the song is about being without someone who brings life to your desert. And that sometimes the distant can play tricks on your mind, like "these visions", perhaps like a desert oasis. The trick being, you make the person into a complete fantasy with anticipation, making a vision of who you think they are or what they are doing based on the time you actually spent with the person, rather than who they really are. Maybe they're a complete jack wagon. :)

Jimmy Eat World – Movielike Lyrics 13 years ago
Another sweet, sweet breakup song, and it's brilliant, no? I see a story unfolding here, a man and woman who live together and can't quite figure each other out. I see the woman suffering from depression, nothing to do with the man, who doesn't know how to fix it. And they grow apart because she can't get herself together. Nothing movie-like, nothing magic. Nothing romantic, no sappy poetry, no songs playing from an 80s ghetto blaster outside someone's window (see Say Anything). This happened to me. My wife suffered from bipolar disorder and as hard as we tried to get back to where we were when we were first married, the illness dominated. It ruined us. Even the line "Welcome to New York" reminds me of my situation, as our problems started just after moving to a new city. And it really is like a movie that you're sitting in a theater watching, wondering if you've seen the best parts of the movie already. Sigh.

Modest Mouse – Here It Comes Lyrics 13 years ago
Put simply, this song is about the vanity of life. It's saying that no matter what you do, the end is coming. I think of Pompeii, where people were doing just normal stuff when a wave of hot ash instantly killed them. Or the flood of Noah's day. There is no escaping it. Its reality. Like death. Here it comes. Doesn't really matter what you do. Great song, but some of the interpretations here are pretty far fetched. Some people don't realize that Isaac Brock is the ultimate cynic. Lots of Modest Mouse lyrics seem to indicate his view of the triviality of life, which I don't entirely disagree with. There is a very Epicurean view in much of their music. (See Guilty Cocker Spaniels, Bury Me With It, Life Like Weeds, etc.) I like that.

What a great song. I agree with the majority of the comments. Its about meeting someone for the first time, getting to know them enough to like them and contemplating whether the two of you have a future. I love the line: "I just met you, I swear I read your thoughts". There is that spark, that excitement in the moment, the thought that this might be the one, after all the searching. I put this on a mixed tape for just such a girl recently. Let's hope there is still such a thing as true love. I'm tired of searching.

The Thermals – I Let it Go Lyrics 13 years ago
Great song. This seems to me to be about clinging to a love that is not returned, i.e. ex-girlfriend, and about finally getting to the point of letting it go. There are lines about finally seeing the destructive nature of hanging on or nursing certain emotions, realizing that it is drowning you, strangling you and hurting you. Perfect song to tell yourself, 'I don't need that bitch. She screwed me over anyway. Fuck her.'

Lifehouse – It Is What It Is Lyrics 13 years ago
There's no hidden meaning to this song. Its plainly put in sight to be seen, heard, felt. Two words: Lost love. The song is great, but knowing the feeling sucks balls. I suppose anyone reading this, or listening to the song knows the feeling. Do you have that gnawing emptiness in your chest like I do? Its the fact that time moves in one direction and there is no do-overs in this life that makes it worse. I personally like the visual right at the beginning, of looking for a shortcut home. Anyone wanting a mate, a companion, a lover, a boyfriend or girlfriend, feels that need to find home. Home in the sense that a lover makes you feel comfortable and safe, like being truly home. Sometimes we search for shortcuts to that place of peace, and end up in the thorns. Still, somewhere in this city (this life) is a road I know, where we (or me, or me and someone else) could make it. Never give up.

Sky Sailing – Brielle Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this is a song about breaking up with someone, but still loving them and still viewing them as a friend. There seems to be a sense that the two characters live in a small coastal town, and perhaps the writer does not live there permanently, but often returns home for long periods of time.

Neon Trees – Our War Lyrics 14 years ago
Oops. My bad. One lyric is wrong...
Should be:

"Everything I do alone
Has every BIT of you"

So, what does this song mean? Well, for me it means this:
Sometimes you have to give up something good for the greater good, either as a whole or individually.. In this case, the conflict these two people have in their relationship is making it hard to stay together even though its hard to stay apart. I can relate. I met a fantastic girl once. Pure angel. Perfect for me in almost every way; beautiful, talented, well-adjusted, smart, etc. But had very different religious beliefs and it became 'our war'. I had to leave it behind. Life has gone on without her. Sigh.

Lovedrug – Pink Champagne Lyrics 14 years ago
Angle should be spelled angel. Also, these lyrics are set really funky, not in line with the song.

Whatever.

So, here is my take on this great song:
This seems to be about a girl who is a constant 'Amy Winehouse', meaning that she is magnetic in looks and personality and talent, but she is a perpetual trainwreck. Probably an alcoholic or drug addict. I think the singer is remembering knowing this girl when her 'troubles' fell in the category of teenage angst or maybe college experimentation, but now they have become real issues and are hindering her life from moving forward. He also seems to not know how to respond to her behavior anymore, and/or how to make her happy, if that is even possible. Maybe I am way off. It's been known to happen.

Great song.

Matt Pond PA – Remains Lyrics 14 years ago
Lyric correction:
Fourth line. Omit 'in all'

Lyrics are missing

Was it on Huron when the wind first changed direction?
Was it on Franklin when I lost you on the streets?
All I remember is gray between the cables
Where muted pavement could not give me two feet

I'll give you everything that you need
If you want my blood, let me bleed
If you want a ghost, then that's what I'll be

You already know
What you don't even know
Read the cover the flap
You just put it back
That's the price we pay
For going in all the way
That's the price we pay
For going in all the way

If you remain in me
I will remain in you
And if you stay with me
I will stay with you

Great song.

Seems to be to be about how two people first meet and start liking each other. After a while they learn some of the darker parts of each other. In this case, it seems that the guy is wounded somehow. Maybe he realizes he has imperfections and flaws or a checkered past (Why are they always checkered? Why not plaid or striped?). Or maybe the girl just doesn't know what she wants. Typical woman. So something happens, the winds change. He loses her. Doesn't matter where or how, maybe on some street in the middle of suburbia hell. And so, after taking one look at the cover and the flap of his 'book', she begins to drift away. All the while, all the guy needs and wants is to belong to someone. And unfortunately or fortunately, only the memories and the thoughts of what could be remain. Not the way I want to be forgotten. (Cristy, if you are reading this, this is about us.) The third line of the song reminds me of the scene in 'Say Anything' where he is talking into his little recorder and driving in the Seattle rain. 'This rain is like a baptism.'- Lloyd Dobbler.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Here Is Gone Lyrics 14 years ago
Not much to add that hasn't been already said, but I want to comment on just one line:

"And I was not the answer so forget you ever thought it was me"

I love this line, cause it kind of sums it up for me. I learned the hard way not to try to find happiness in other people, but to find it in yourself. Otherwise, you're not much good to anyone. I was dumped by a girl I loved with all my heart, and since then, I have grown and have realized that what I would have had to do to be with her, would have made me unhappy. She was not "the answer".

Peace out fools.

The Enemy – Last Goodbye Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that there is more than one way to look at this song. One way, the more obvious, is death. It obviously has something to do with death because he says:

I won't hear you call my name
I'm in a place where souls can stay

He also mentions heaven, etc. So there is that aspect. But I found that outside the context of death, it could very easily be adapted to mean "Fuck You", I'm outta here, and the last goodbye is a middle finger, Johnny Cash style. Very much on the same line as "Nice To Know You" by Incubus, or "Lost For Words" by Pink Floyd. Basically a goodbye in the sense of 'I'm so f-ing done with you. Go away and die.' So, what do you think? Its either a sad sappy song about dying, or a balls-to-the-wall tirade of indifference and separation. I prefer the latter.

Peace out.

Anberlin – Alexithymia Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't have much to say about the meaning here, but the word Alexithymia is brilliant. I love its meaning, the idea and the fact that someone has actually studied it.

As far as the song goes...everything that has been said seems about right to me, like that its about having some emotions in life, rather than just going through the motions, eat, sleep, work, die. There is more to living than being alive. Brilliant line.

So, rather than an explanation, I will just say, why don't we all take this songs advice and do something with our pitiful lives. Tell the people you care about that you love them. Make art, play music, write, dance. Smile more often. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Have a sense of humor. Don't waste time watching TV so much.

Have a good life.

Modest Mouse – Guilty Cocker Spaniels Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe, like most songs, there are several ways to interpret it. From my standpoint, it relates to relationships. Here is why I think this...

"took off running that the greatest speed" - I was excited for this new relationship.
"didn't bother looking to either side of me" - I was blinded by love.
"the truth stopped and the skyline rose" - Pretty soon, the fact that you didn't love me like I loved you became evident and a new destination, not the one I anticipated came into view.
"exchanging comfort for more fashionable clothes" - I changed who I was because its what you wanted.
"left the hills, to run on treadmills" - again, left the comfort of my home to conform.
"salad days add up to daily shit" - does it really matter if I change everything, even down to the things I eat daily to conform, because its all ending up in the same place anyway.
Guilty cocker spaniels, eating table scraps, doing tricks for the master: somebody here already nailed it. I think its about lowering yourself and doing dumb shit, just so people (read: girlfriend) will like you. And then when you want more and they don't give it back the "program fails" and they "defensively laugh" as if to say..."Oh that's just not how I felt."
We did the things just how you asked, but the other party doesn't feel guilty, doesn't think you have the right to an apology, and then finally admits that it was all an act, a "mask". Happy Halloween. It was all just a game, even though they didn't tell you that. So, now, in a losing battle, I guess I'll just play until I'm out of cash.
Then this part is the best. I can't say anything to make things change with the girlfriend, because no matter what thought it is its "taken out of context either way."
We both said that this was a blessing (to be in love) in the beginning "we deserve every bit. But mostly we knew that the supply would quit. But we got going, going just away with it until everybody lost their mind."
The last part about "postdating a eulogy", I think means that the memories that we shared together as a couple in love, will linger long after the breakup or "death" of the relationship, if you will, and that they will be repeating in our heads long after like a eulogy.
And lastly, all the talk about blame, makes me think about the Howard Jones song: "No One Is To Blame". Sometimes its no ones fault that love ends.

That's my piece and my peace. Late.

Third Eye Blind – The Background Lyrics 15 years ago
Its funny you should say that Third Eye Blind explains your life better than you can sometimes. I think I have to agree. I just recently divorced and my ex-spent much time in the hospital, for various reasons. She was bipolar and often did things that seemed crazy. And yet, we loved each other. Even now, this song haunts me. Almost everyday. I recall the times she spent in the hospital and the things she would say to me. And the plans we had, and how strangely, even though I have moved on, the plans I make still have her in them. I still see and hear her words ring in my ear. I find notes she left behind. Its eerie. There has never been a more defining song for me than this.

Counting Crows – Recovering The Satellites Lyrics 15 years ago
The beauty of music is its a dynamic language that can be interpreted in whatever way a person wants it to be, as is the case with this song. After reading the above entries, I can't help but think how narrowly I have thought of this song in my own head. Nevertheless, I have my own interpretation or translation if you will and it has more to do with how it makes me feel than what I think it means. Here goes...
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of my little sister. All my siblings are very close and my sister was the first to move away from the small town we grew up in. Its a shit town too. I was the second to live. We both reside in large cities in California and we both thrive on the hustle and bustle, the concrete jungle, the opportunities and new experiences that metropolitan areas provide. We privately joke about how visiting our hometown is like watching an old movie for the 200th time. Its familiar but quite boring. And, of course, all our family is still there and the occasions for reuniting there are few. But there is definitely a quietness of being that is somewhat soothing when you're home, something that you can't find anywhere else. Gonna get back to basics. There is a sense of being able to collect yourself at home, to escape. So, why did I come home, to this faithless town? I miss my sister because she represents home to me, like my two brothers also do. And being away from family can mess with your head if you are truly close to them. There is also a sense of defeat if you must, for reasons beyond your control, return home. Its a lifetime commitment, leaving or returning. And Mom is always there to recover the satellites, her kids, and to ask, 'When are you going to come down?' She watched and still watches as her babies drift violently away, all so we can find ourselves, to see ourselves in telescopes. And sometimes what we find is really fucked up...We are such crazy babies, little Monkey. And here again, is why I think of my sister, because on this same album, the song Monkey seems to be about the author's sister....and another song (?) has the lyrics..."Leave my sister alone. She is a flower." So, we look and look to discover who we truly are inside and out and believe that we don't need to be angels, or kings, or rich and powerful, but we are nothing if we are not this high...far above home, seeing it from a distance. And in the stream of time, this song repeats itself, the returning, the orbiting, the crashing, the relaunching, the coming down. I miss my sister.

Silversun Pickups – Kissing Families Lyrics 15 years ago
Hardak, above me, has a very interesting point. Never thought of it in the way he/she described. However, as fitting as that sounds, I still would like to think of it in terms of a bad romantic relationship, especially cause of the last line...
"thank God its over."
That's the key to me. You can walk away from a bad relationship with a lover, but family you can't escape. They seep in your veins every moment of every day. Besides, it seems to much more intriguing to look at this as a bitter love song.
Either way, I say, season to taste.

Oh, by the way, one lyric above is wrong....

Should be:

Weezer – The Angel and the One Lyrics 16 years ago
I think all the comments above, (except for the completely meaningless "This is a great song" BS) are all correct. I have a slightly different take, but it is going to sound strange. So, here goes....

As a bit of background I am including an interesting link to read near the bottom of this post. This song is a song of spirituality, not sex, and barely about love, although it is definitely there. No doubt.

But if you read up on Rivers personal life, you will find that he is a very spiritual person, even taking a vow of celibacy, helping the poor, and giving away material belongings (see link). So put that in your mental hash pipe and smoke it. To me, that bit of info changes the whole dynamic of this song. It is now about something much higher than being tempted to have sex with someone you are not married to. It is about achieving a higher sense of being and purpose and yet still struggling with all the inclinations and desires of a fleshly, physical being.
So analyze the lyrics with this new information.
Sometimes I want to taste......
Another love (God?) that I would rather be obeying.
...deeper peace....I am complete....
....a higher place....and finally the ending....
Peace. Peace with self, peace with God, peace with the other person whom he may completely be in love with and want to enjoy sexually, but is holding back. And shalom. Look at the wikipedia link. That is, I will agree, a strange place to put "Shalom", but once you see the meaning, it seems so much more appropriate than the other things people are thinking that they hear.

That's my take, fools. Late.

Nada Surf – Are You Lightning? Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems to me that this song is about finding love again later in life and feeling the excitement of being in love again. He says he is acting like he is 21 again, just completely awed by this new love. Back at square one, feeling dumb. He fumbles to know what to say, what to do, so as not to ruin this feeling. He sees this girl everywhere, completely consumed with her, not obsessed, but feeling alive and feeling scared. He refers to this girl as lightning, as if to say, your brightness scares me like a child, but its an exciting fear.

This song is about love, but not about a "normal" boy meets girl, boy loses girl, etc. type songs, as many have commented.
Basically, the song has a completely different meaning if you think of the sea as an illness, physical or mental, but mostly a deep depression.

The singer sees his loved one being swallowed up by this deep depression, and he hates that. He wants her to know that depression does not deserve her, and will not take her from him.

There. Put that in your mental VCR and push play.

Death Cab for Cutie – Company Calls Epilogue Lyrics 17 years ago
Dudes, this song is NOT about getting drunk at someone's wedding. A little drinking maybe, and not out of joy, but out of a desire to numb the quiet pain that can't be spoken. It is about loving someone so much that you let them go and marry someone other than you, hoping the best, but regretting that when you had your shot, you didn't do it differently. It relates to the line in the song "The Sound of Settling", I'll sit and wonder about every love that could have been, if I'd only thought of something charming to say." What do you do? Make a drunken scene, like crashing through the doors and just blurting out whatever, ruining the happiest moment in the life of the one you truly love? Can't do it. It's one of the few heart-breaking songs that isn't cliché. Brilliant work Ben, brilliant work. And props to Walla too. Better than McCartney or Lennon in terms of emotional impact.
