I feel like this could definitely be about a car wreck, but I don't think that the loved one was in the passenger seat, nor was this person lost. To me it sounds like the narrator of the song was in the passenger seat. "I travel around the block and I'm not looking to my right" (if she were in the passenger seat and not looking to her right she wouldn't see a car coming from that side) "I feel the glass against my cheek and I can't see you in the light" (when the car hit the headlights would have been blindingly bright, thus making her not see the driver as she was looking at her) I think the beginning of this song (i.e. before the lines "I travel around the block," etc.) are meant to show how the two people involved are dealing with it differently as shown in the part, "but it’s a different situation a different situation you lay awake in the night just staring at the ceiling above pulling pieces of it out is such a waste of time" If the subject of the song was the driver, she would most likely be dealing with the situation in a much heavier way, blaming herself, etc. And then in the following verse it feels to me like there is some sort of resolution: "You wake up in the night and refuse to be afraid of it now. Unfolding pieces of it faster don’t you waste your time." It seems like the subject, or driver, wakes up in the night with some sort of revelation and finally talks about it (unfolding pieces of it... like telling a story). p.s. If it turns out this song isn't about a crash, then I'm going to feel like a complete crazy person, haha. |

I definitely agree with yesterdaystomorrow1 for the most part. The only thing that I see differently is the "I'm not unfaithful, but I'll stray" line. I don't think the "stray" has anything to do with flirting with others but more to do with an emotional distance. Also, to respond to I think that the line, "I know these habits hurt important parts of you," makes much more sense when taken in context with the previous line and with the fact that Tegan and Sara are gay, i.e. she knows the habit of jerking away from holding hands with her girlfriend in public hurts her. |

I think this song is about a couple in which person 1 has decided that she needs a break from the relationship to deal with her own issues, and the narrator (person 2) is having a hard time with the separation and can't move on. She (the narrator) is trying to express that she just wants to be with the subject despite what the subject thinks she may need to accomplish by taking a break. The lyrics "Don't be so hard on yourself, you won't get better 'til you get worse. Send your love my way," give me the sense that shes trying to say "Don't leave and try to get better because its just going to get worse. Stay with me and love me." Oh, and regarding the issue of the title, I definitely think that it was deliberately a line from the song "And Darling." Maybe the subject of this song was the same in both songs. In "And Darling" the subject seems to be breaking the narrator's heart, so to speak, with her love, and in this song her heart is being broken because she was left by this person. |

I don't know what I think about the whole "drunken night" interpretation of the song. I think maybe that's a part of it, but I feel like there's more to it than that. The beginning definitely suggests that a relationship was taken to another level and that the subject (girl 2) is much more comfortable with that than the narrator (girl 1). Then comes the chorus. This is where I think a piece was missing from the other interpretations of this song. It sounds like at the point the song was written girl 1 is more comfortable with the relationship (i.e. the idea of a gay relationship), but she can't understand why girl 2 is interested in her. "All you got is me, All you want is me." I do think that the lyrics suggest at first that girl 1 was hesitant, but only because of her own insecurity. The last line "This is the time of my life," shows that she doesn't regret getting into this relationship. |
