Oh man, I saw you post this on the family tradition blog, and i was hoping i could beat you here to make sure you didn't post the same thing again : ( I tried to be the one that everybody loved Where has that gotten me I tear myself to shreds to prove that I'm someone That I could never be Now these unsightly marks define me So help me Please someone come quick I think I am losing it Forget me I inherited this From a stranger I'll never miss I'm sick My Father taught me Firsthand how to be set free Give up and run away I wish I could drain out his half of blood in me But I still have his face I curse reflections every day So help me Please someone come quick I think I am losing it Forget me I inherited this From a stranger I'll never miss Here is my own family tradition Following footsteps into addiction So is there a way, that I can find peace while still marrying my pain Is this my fate, cuz your only son still can't seem to find his way So help me Please someone come quick I think I am losing it Forgive me I inherited this From a stranger I'll never miss So father where the hell are you now? I think that you would be proud Your son who's so unlike a leaf fell right next to the tree I hope you’re proud of me I hope you’re proud |

Has anyone noticed that there are two people talking in a lot of the songs on this album? In one verse it says " Hold my hand and check my pulse, revive me with just one touch" Who is this 'me' we are talking about? Is he speaking for himself, or is this the voice of the person that he will find on the floor? Later on in the song, the lyric changes to " I hold your hand and check your pulse, you're already out cold on the floor." It seems as if the verse changed pronouns and is now reffering to him. in retrospect is the song where she dies. "Shes killing herself to sleep" But, The next song " the artificial" seems like he is pleading with the voice, albeit an artifical presence to come back to him. He speaks about how paths arent always pre determined and that does she realize what she is leaving behind.... But hey, its just my interpretation. There is probably much much more to it. |

I totally agree with "the7Keys and AYesso " The song is based around the revolutions they both mentioned. Although, i think it is focused more around the French Revolution through the eyes of Louis XVI and how he felt. This verse reminds me most of the French Revolution: "It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn’t believe what I’d become" The Mobs came and ransacked the castle. They wanted the tyrant king. "Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate " The head on a silver plate line reminds me of the guillotine. The new rulers of France wanted to erase the remains of the once- current regime. Good ol' Robspierre : ) Louis XIV was eventually executed by means of the guillotine. But even then, there is so much more to this song! |

I agree with sabio in a lot of respects. I love how each element is figuratively speaking to us. Of all of the sonnets, i find this one the most interesting...probably for the amazing burial feeling towards the end. When i listen to the second verse of the song, it portrays a motherly or guardian like view. We are children of the earth in a lot of meanings, and this verse really shows that. Our parents (in this case Earth) do everything for us, and provide everything for us. On earth we have everything we could ever want. But what do we do with these beautiful natural resources? We squander them, and waste them and don't appreciate them. In the similar fashion, do we always appreciate everything our parents do? Teenagers are known for their "rebelling" phase. In a lot of ways, i think Earth is mocking us for our despicable actions : " Now safe beneath their wisdom and their feet..." and " And though above the world may toil and turn, no prying spade will find you here below." Earth has looked at humanity in a negative way.. throughout this sonnet, and these lines are no different. I know there is a lot more to be said about this song, but one could say that about any thrice song. This is just one section of the song....but basically what im trying to say is.... The earth is disappointed in us. |

they are not advocating a position in favor of suicide. They are just using it as a dramatic example of the effect your actions have on the world, despite the fact that many people believe their lives to be insignificant in the scale of things. Suicide is the topic that many of their listeners can relate with being that it is one of the leading causes of death in this country. A lot of the songs on this album are related in some ways. i almost wonder if the death of someone they loved sparked this outburst. But whatever the cause, the next song "what ive done" is when he asks everyone even himself for forgiveness for obviously what hes done. But, Linkin Park themselves said that every song had many meanings to it...so this may just be scratching the surface of what is really there....who knows |

Has anyone noticed the perspective changes in the song? The first verse is in the first person perspective about what he is going to do, or plans to do. Then, he changes perspective to what his actions have done to the people around him. the effect of what anyones actions have on the world; a two fold meaning of what he was going to do and what it is going to do to the people around him. I have also noticed that this song is linked to "What I've Done" Both in a metaphorical sense and a literal sense. As, the song "shadow of a day" transitions seamlessly into "What I've Done" Both songs deal with internal struggle, and the effect of your actions upon the world....themes which are prevalent in BOTH songs. I also agree with many of you about the suicide aspect to this song, however i would like to add that i also believe it applies to "What ive Done" Being that the Self Mutilation was what he did, and he is not only asking to forgive himself, he is asking for all of those that he loves to forgive him for What hes done. |
