"See I can talk forever
Except when it counts."
Nailed me straight in the chest. Julia is one of the guilty pleasures on my ipod. |

I was under the impression that the line went:
I'm sorry I'm numb
But you deserve to feel dumb
If you thought I was somebody else |

I'm very much in favor of the "Damned heretic doing what he feels is right despite what he's told" interpretation. It makes that last line even better:
"Go down to the netherworld. Plant grapes."
He's going right to hell for 'helping' these people like this. He knows this. Rather than escape his fate, he's going to try to make hell itself better. He'll just plant some fucking grapes down there when he arrives. Awesome. |

According to the band, this is based on a snippet of Leonard Cohen graffiti:
MARITA
PLEASE FIND ME
I AM ALMOST 30.
But, as they say, "Leonard's whores are classier than ours." |

"we've got food for weeks and weeks
and all that blood would find its way to the carpet"
Oh, good. I guess they finally-
"sitting there I couldn't shake that guilt
as the deer walked free up the hill"
-...holy ****. |

I think the line is "I was breathing up against the window." As in, fogging it up. Which is something John does with startling frequency.
OH MY GOD THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME. THAT IS ALL. |

This may be my favorite of this set of three (Hye Kye and Extreme South being the other two).
I love that the first chorus seems like he intends to get into some serious deviance, whereas the second one seems almost threatening. |

I totally agree with yurkyurk. The song seems to me to be about death, specifically about the untimely death of someone the narrator loved (girlfriend, wife, child, etc). The world couldn't hold them, and they slipped free (died) without the narrator, who is still alive.
Often, when someone dies young, you'll hear people talk about how much they brightened up a room, or made everything better with their smile. That's what this song is, essentially. That line, "...Or you used to, anyway" is easy to miss, but it's devastating for me.
Anyhow, this song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. |

Ah, poor John. Guy needs to take some iron supplements or something. At the last show I went to he says to us, he says:
"It's uncommon for me to make it through a whole show without complaining of some physical ailment. I haven't done so tonight, but let me assure you: I am in excruciating pain."
I love this song. Can't wait for the EP to be available on iTunes. |

This song is about the need for sorrows and rain in order for us to appreciate the sunny days and the happiness of life. For instance:
"Not long ago I misjudged it
I thought only smiles would do
Now I see I need
The tears and frowns too" |

At first I was like:
"Awesome, a song about sock puppets!"
Then I was like:
"OH MY GOD, THAT'S AN MC HAMMER AND BEASTIE BOYS REFERENCE WHEN DOES THIS ALBUM STOP GETTING BETTER?!"
It doesn't. |

This is a really pretty song. It's almost out of place on the album, but somehow it fits in nicely. No More Kings is so awesome it hurts! |

I'm figuring "We saw red, not green, when we were nineteen" is more about being angry at the world (seeing red-like you are when you're young) and less concerned about making money (seeing green) which is what happened to whoever you think Ted's talking to. |

I don't think that what's in the cup is alcohol. I think that it's consequences. Of our actions in the Middle East specifically, but it goes wider. I think it's a "you have to deal with the consequences of your actions" thing. |

How has no one commented on this? Such a great song. I love Ted Leo. My favorite line here is "I've got to sing just to exist". So do I.
I'm not sure about an overall meaning, but it sounds like some one left him alone with the "sons of Cain", or people inferior to the one who left. Or something. |
