There's a theme to Hurricane Katrina as well as both singers loss of their fathers in it, but surprisingly I think everyone is missing the greater meaning behind the lyrics, which are deeply rooted in Christian theology. "how long now Until a weather change condemns belief" - a reference to the tribulation period where "weather" and other miricles kill many of the unbelievers/belief in other than Christ. "how long now When the nightwatchman lets in the thief" The "thief" is a reference to the "thief in the night" analagy Jesus gave about his return at an unexpected time. "Until the clouds unroll and you come down/home" The clouds are a reference to Christ's return, and "you come home/down" is a reference to the ressurection of souls. "daddy" might be a euphamism for God (i.e., The Father) Overall, the song is about The End Times, the return of Christ on His cloud with his legion of angels, and the ressurrection of the souls (The Saints are Comming) Whether I'm right or wrong, I love the music and mood of this song alot. The video is one of the best ever. |

Thnks BonoIsGodd for the correct lyrics. I still wonder whether "Ho, Cha, Hey" is actually "Ho, Child, Hey" and the line "what's wrong now" makes me think it is probably "Child" There's a theme to Hurricane Katrina as well as both singers loss of their fathers in it, but surprisingly I think everyone is missing the greater meaning behind the lyrics, which are deeply rooted in Christian theology. Ross Curfew's explaination is very good. I think he found the smoking gun to clear up what was likely intended to be ambiguous word play on the word "I AM/I am". I really like the HTDMAAB delux booklet cuz it has lots of hints in it regarding the meaning of the songs. From reading the booklet it makes me think the "I AM gone" in the song "Mercy" is also about I AM because it is all capitalized whereas the other words are not (also a consistent meaning to the line in "A Man and a Women" which goes "But you're gone and so is God.") Too bad Mercy was left out of the CD, I think if it was included then more people would understand and better appreciate the deep lyrics on HTDMAAB. I still wonder if that was the real reason Mercy was left out. |

"The shackles are undone" - A reference to overcomming death and the original sin Don't have any idea what "Bullets quit the gun" means. "The heat that's in the sun Will keep us when it's done" - A reference to the Revelation verse that there won't be a sun in the new age. "The rule has been disproved" - death doesn't mean death (a resurrection reference) "The stone, it has been moved The grain is now a grove All debts are removed" - A reference to the payment of the sin (original sin) by Christ. "The sky over our head We can reach it from our bed" - Get to heaven by faith and prayer "And to love I raphsodize" - To love others (including God) Bono sings and impromptu too. |

I feel so fortunate to have a copy of this song, and I know I wouldn't get tired of it. I like I Know Things explaination. It make sense to me since the Delux Booklet to HTDMAAB has a whole page of lyrics of the song and the title Mercy is also mentioned in the time-line page of the booklet too, and the song is way too good to be a B-side song and as it was simply omitted. I Think You Know tell us more. Why can't we handle the truth? |

The music in this song is awesome. The lyric line written above "are we supposed to be together?" also sounds like and is commonly quoted elsewhere as "always suppose to be together." I think it is primarily intended to be "Always suppose to be together" but is also geniusly intended to ask the question to the person who is referenced in the song as "You(r)" what it also sounds like "Are we suppose to be together" The other line above that might be misquoted is ofter quoted as "It's been our destiny forever" I think it is significant to the meaning of the song that the first line omits any reference to "you" or "your" whereas the other lines, such as "Just one touch from your hands was all it took to make me faulter" does reference "you(r)." So here's my conclusions: "Just one kiss on my lips Was all it took to seal the future " is a reference to a marriage kiss of the singer. That I'm fairly certain. "Just one look from your eyes Was like a certain kind of torture," "Just one touch from your hands Was all it took to make me falter," Just one word from your mouth Was all I needed to be certain" are in reference to a connection made between soulmates (one who is the singer and one not the one she married). Madonna seems to be all into that soulmate stuff/belief, and the other verses of the song make me think that is what it's about. The forbidden love theme probably relates to marriage/monogomy thing, and from the other songs such as "Get Together" maybe even "Hung Up" and even "Jump" make me think it is more likely a strong value comming from the non-singer soulmate. which makes sence since another line in the song is unlike quoted above sounds like and is ofter quoted as "It's been our destiny forever" |
