Sarah McLachlan – Fear Lyrics 18 years ago
As weird as this may sound: to me, the lyrics sound like the poetic thoughts of a virgin contemplating sex. the line "from above they say temptation will destroy our love" to me sounds like a reference to most religions that say not to give into the temptation of premarital sex. Having nothing to give, but having so much to lose; once you give up your virginity, you cannot get it back and in many cultures would be considered tainted. "there is nothing I'd like better than to fall, but I fear..." Indecision about a very important choice that many do not consider very carefully.

But whatever the meaning, this song extrordinary.

the music itself is so comepletely powerful, almost overwhelming. The wind and light are given humanistic qualities; as if to give voice to friends that One has chased clear across the earth and back again.

Everything about this song is simply phenomenal, the music, the lyrics, everything flows perfectly together, as if this sequence of words and notes were created to join together. the words "the smell of wine and cheap perfume" is the most beautiful configuration of letters and syllabels ever strung together. I have it tattooed in a kick-ass font across my ankle. along with my bunny rabbit with a top hat and the word 'Presto' for the best Rush album ever!

Rush – The Pass Lyrics 18 years ago
Although points to suicide are mentions, i really feel that this also has to do with adolesents, and the fact that we've all been told that "teenagers think that they know everything". To me, it seems more like that. A teen, just finishing school, thinking they know all there is to know, think that they've seen it all; and then the real world comes up and smacks them in the face. They are scared and confused (perhaps contemplating suicide as an escape), they realize how naive they were.

I think that everyone, at some point in their life, has felt such despair.

It's about vanity. and it's actually missing two important lines

--- ambition for illusion
--- dreams for self-delusion

They go right after "Boys and Girls together/Mistake conceit for pride"

Basically, when people look at themselves, they don't see the truth. They see themselves as they want to be, not as they truely are. Putting on makeup or certain clothes to create a fantasy of their true selves.

Jewel – Amen Lyrics 18 years ago
Though a good point is made in saying that this song has a good deal to do with religion, when I first really looked at the lyrics, I almost felt that this song was about a rape. Perhaps not to be taken as a literal rape, but a rape of the senses.
"You're mothers' child, but night lays you down" could be refering to a young girl who, rebeling against parental figures, leaves home. But the "Night" could be a reference to something evil. "Hair aflame, wile look in your eyes" is an enticement, but with "Naked belly to the ground" could be an aspect of her life gone wrong, or the begining of the rape. She is vunerable. "A forest fire..." I felt was a feeling of helplessness. A rage that burns through her body at this betrayal, and her inability to do anything about it. "Eyes stare up, but something's in the way" She looks towards sky, seeking redemption, but all of her problems, 'the rape', are blocking her view. "In the Bible only..." it is saying that only those most pure, 'angels', have the ability to save themselves, while the rest of humanity must endure. She will not be saved from this torment. "A dry tongue screams at the sky..." she cannot even scream to save herself, as if the world itself conspires against her. In the end, she just feels that God has abandoned her to this fate.
