| The Dismemberment Plan – Back And Forth Lyrics | 23 years ago |

I think this song is about the unseen complexity of everyday life. As humans, and more specifically, as Americans we just go about our lives, going to parties, doing the cool things, never considering the nature of the ground we stand on or the hopelessly complex strings of atoms and chemical equations that form our bodies. This notion seems to be weaved in with a tale of a man who goes to a party, meets a woman he is very attracted to, then never sees again. |

I think he may be making a reference to the giant saucers in the movie Independence Day... at least that's what I picture when I think of "dead black disk slides silently overhead." I agree with bizarre. This song asks what a person does when there are only 8.5 minutes left for humanity... loot, pillage, and rape or apologize and express love. |

| A song about a man addicted to sex. He cannot explain the nature of his compulsion... all he can do is express his desire for physical contact. | |
| The Dismemberment Plan – Spider In The Snow Lyrics | 23 years ago |

This song is about a person going out of their way to avoid any kind of close ties with anyone else. During a low period in his/her life the protagonist of the song had five friends/acquaintances, and cannot remember any of their names just a short time later. He/she works in a temp job, daily doing the same labor amongst a group of strangers, forming a bond with no one. The protagonist is afraid of getting close but doesn't even realize it. The narrator tries to impress this point on the protagonist, but it never sticks. The protagonist just keeps doing busy-work like to take away the sting of being alone. I'm not 100% sure what a spider in the snow has to do with any of this, but I imagine it is a way of saying the protagonist feels cold, alone, exposed (a black spider would stand out against white snow). JMHO. |

| The Dismemberment Plan – You Are Invited Lyrics | 23 years ago |

I'll agree with staygold. An internet friend recommended The Dismemberment Plan to me a while back... I was kind of expecting some sort of death metal, but was pleasantly surprised with intelligent rock. This is without question my favorite song off Emergency & I. It puts me in a good mood every time I hear it, especially when he describes meeting his ex-girlfriend at the party. The beat changes, and when she smiles and tells him he is invited the song just breaks open. Not much mystery in this song. He gets a symbolic invitation that gives him confidence and a feeling of empowerment. Just heard it recently, but no doubt one of my favorite songs. |
