Cat Power – Song for Bobby Lyrics 17 years ago
The title alludes to Bob Dylan's 'Song to Woody,' written to his idol, Woody Guthrie, I'm sure.

Bob Dylan – Girl from the North Country Lyrics 18 years ago
Well ok pretty much everyone was wrong about the origin of this song.

It's based off of the tune and some of the lyrics of Scarborough fair, which is not just a Simon & Garfunkel song but a traditional English folk song.

When he travelled to England for the first time and spent some time with a buddy he made, Martin Carthy, he tought Dylan the song and he wrote it a little later and it appeared on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

The original lyrics to Scarborough fair are:

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
Without no seams nor needlework
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

When Simon & Garfunkel sang it, they added in extra lyrics that overlap the original words. They also made the song their own creation, and it sounds much more harmonic.

It is unknown who Bob Dylan actually wrote this song about, because it could either be his first significant girlfriend in high school, Echo Helstrom, or his second significant girlfriend, Bonnie Beecher, whom he met at the University of Minnesota. For flattery, I'm sure, he told both women the song was about them later on, but either way, the song is very autobiographical.

And either way, a beautiful song.

Even though I posted that comment a really long time ago, yes of course it's sarcastic. I thought that was pretty apparent.

Bob Dylan – Dark Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, this song was something he just wrote up to finish off the album. It didn't seem to have a great lot of meaning to Dylan or fans of the time or those of today, for that matter. I really can't understand why it's so underrated; I absolutely love this song. Very sorrowful.

Is it just me, or are the words in these lyrics completely arranged wrong and really weird...?

Elvis Costello – Alison Lyrics 18 years ago
Agh, I'm sorry but the people who are dumb enough to assume it's about "Alison" being pregnant are pissing me off.
You assume this because of when he says, "I don't know if you've been loving somebody, I only know it isn't mine."
He isn't saying, that baby isn't mine, he's being grammatically correct by saying that Alison isn't loving his body, but another man's.
So like it wouldn't make sense if he said I only know it isn't me. If he would have said "loving someone" he could, but since it's "loving Somebody", he says mine.

This song is simply about an old love who can't seem to figure out the world. The world is killing her, because she just has all of these burdens, and has made so many mistakes. She married a man who didn't really care about her. The writer (Costello) still cares about her welfare, but she keeps tripping into mistakes, perhaps because of just the way she is.

In my opinion, the live version at the Bridge School Concerts is infinitely better than the original recorded song.
The original is a bit cheesy sounding to me.
The live version is sung with a lot more heart and voice, and the instruments are a hell of a lot better.

I think...
That I would die
If I ever found a love such as the serene and peaceful one outlined in this song.

This song is EXISTENTIALIST.
He's saying that people go in circles because existence to him is hard to decipher.
The worn out places and worn out faces are going no where, because what place do any of us have in the world (the universe, existence, etc. for that matter) amongst every other creature of thing?
So the way I interpret it is that the dreams in which he's dying are the best he's ever had because he can finall maybe gain some understanding, or that he simply gets to put an end to something that never had a point in the first place.
To truly see the point of this song, I guess you'd sort of have to be depressed at the moment.

Hee, it's a simple song about how women want love and romance, but men want sex and lots of it. Haha I love how you sillies are interpreting this so much. It's just saying it's the way it's been since the end of time, i.e. the historical references.
That, my dears, is why the girls are crying and the boys are masturbating.
'Tis a half-truth of time.
