| A reprise is the repeating of something that happened before, so "with no reprise" definitely means that something has ended. It could mean a troubled relationship hasn't survived to see the next day, or that someone has passed away after a long fight and she is grieving, but she realizes that life will go on. I choose to think it's the latter. | |

I hadn't read the liner notes when I first heard this song, so when I tried to figure out what it was about, I thought of Anne Frank. Phrases like empty streets, broken glass, waiting until darkness, pulling the papers, etc. The final part about riding with her father out to the sea made me think that was Anne's last thought before dying in a Nazi concentration camp. After I read a bit about Anne Sexton did I see what the imagery in this song was inspired by. But I still think of Anne Frank sometimes when I put this album on. It still sorta "fits" after all of these years. |
