Oceansize – Commemorative 9/11 T-shirt Lyrics 16 years ago
That's true, but it's a little more than that.

I think this song is a reaction to the fact that people in our society feel obligated to feign sadness whenever 9/11 is mentioned. Nobody is making light of the tragedy, but it's been years. It shouldn't be necessary to pretend to still be sad to fit in with society when most of us have moved on by now.

The "cashing in on misery" part also leads me to believe that they are commenting on politicians (and others) that have used 9/11 fear mongering to get reelected and/or push their own agendas. And maybe even in the most obvious literal sense, people that have profited by selling 9/11 T-shirts and memorabilia. I think these are the people that he's "having a laugh" about.

Thrice – Firebreather Lyrics 18 years ago
Fair enough Sabio. I think everyone would agree that many of Dustin's lyrics are influenced by his Christian faith. I was just pointing out the fact that the band does not regard themselves as a Christian band, and that not all of their songs are religiously rooted (as many seem to think). I also think that some people try a little too hard to find a religious meaning within Thrice's songs due to their reputation. Although you may find an interpretation that satisfies you, with enough thought, one should be able to find some biblical parallel in basically every song ever written - that doesn't mean that the artist intended for the song to be religious.

As far as the interpretation of this particular song....I could actually go either way on this one. My point would probably be a little more valid if I posted it under a different Thrice thread. I was just a little irritated by your statement that your interpretation of the song was "truth" and the implication that everyone else needed to see your point of view for their "own sake". (I also wanted to clarify that not all of the band members are Christians)

Thrice – Firebreather Lyrics 18 years ago
Sabio, I'm sure that many would appreciate your interpretation of the song, but you should also be aware that according to the Thrice band members, Thrice is NOT a Christian band. Here's a few quotes from an interview with their drummer, Riley:

"We're definitely not a Christian band. We've never been into being preachy, never been into spreading any kind of word. It just came from [lead singer Dustin Kensrue] singing about issues that he was having--a lot of those were faith-based.......I think that's a good thing. I'm not a Christian, and I'm not exactly sure what I believe in. But I do believe in looking for answers and being open to a lot of different things."

If you look into it, you'll find that Dustin has echoed those statements numerous times. You call for others to search for a deeper meaning in their songs, but you may want to try that yourself. Even some of their songs which seem obviously allegorical also have another meaning. My favorite thing about this band is easily the depth and texture within their lyrics and instrumentation. This is such a great and cathartic song; it would be a shame for it to only mean something to the Christian population.

Dredg – Planting Seeds Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation of the chorus was a little different than RockXWL's.

My first impression was that "Look what I have found" was meant in a sarcastic way. He thought that he had found something beautiful and special (the seashell being a metaphor for the love of his life), but in fact, he had simply found something common and ordinary (just another girl). Basically....Look what I have found! Just another seashell.

In Flames – Only For The Weak Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song about being stuck in an unhappy relationship due to a combination of guilt and fear.

"I can't tolerate your sadness
cause it's me you're drowning"
I won't allow any happiness
'cause everytime you laugh, I feel so guilty"

Her sadness/emotions make him miserable, but he keeps it on the inside. He feels guilty when she is happy, because it reminds him by contrast of the fact that he is hiding his misery from her. Also, maybe he feels like he owes her happiness, and if he broke up with her her laughter would end.

"Sell me the infection, it's only for the weak
No need for sympathy, the misery that is me
No need for sympathy, it's only for the weak
On bleeding knees I accept my fate"

The infection is love, and he says it's only for the weak because he considers himself weak for not being able to end a relationship that is making him miserable. He doesn't want any sympathy because he knows that all his misery is his own fault. Rather than break up with her for a chance at happiness, he has accepted his fate to continue being trapped in an unhappy relationship.

Shadows Fall – The Power Of I And I Lyrics 18 years ago
"True piece of mind
Is not bestowed
Upon us by the heavens.
The evils of man
Are spawned within"

That says it all right there - he is discounting the belief in a destiny predetermined by "the heavens", and placing the blame for all the problems in the world (and by implication, the responsibility to make the world a better place) solely on us.

By the way, Shadows Fall is not a death metal band. This is much more accurately a hybrid thrash/hardcore CD. Their older stuff may have been borderline death, but War Within has very little in common with death metal.
