i disagree.. i think this isn't her best song, it's sort of an overplayed concept, but i don't think it's like amy in the white coat. i can understand why you'd think so though.
i think i spelled cumulous wrong. |

this song feels like rebirth after like, the apocalypse or something like that. in the beginning, like tigerlilylove said, it feels like you're under water, and then as the guitar comes in, it's like you've reached shore and are just surveying the damage. "watch its insides twist and smoke and rotate endlessly," is like seeing how bad things are and if we can pick up and start over again. the line, "soon we'll manufacture replicas, it's all replaceable," seems like the narrator decided the damage done was too thorough and they'd have to start over.
the next whole stanza sounds like the narrator talking about how it was before the rebirth or apocalypse or whatever. like the world was about to blow up, and how you had to censor everything you said, and there was nothing new to think because it'd all been thought before.
that's just my take on it though. i love this song no matter which way you look at it! |

i love sufjan's emotional range. he can go from making me sob like a four year old in casimir pulaski day, to something completely ridiculous like this. still a great song though, one of my favorites just for the humor! |

i don't like stevenson as a politician, but sufjan makes him seem beautiful. to me, adlai seemed like he was running for president just because, like an obligation. not the good, bobby-kennedy sort of obligation (see his announcement-of-candidacy speech in '68), but the, 'gosh i guess i should, i don't really want to' obligation. i think this is where mr. stevens comes up with, "1952, the heart was not your master," as in his heart was just not in it.
that's just what i think though! beautiful song! |

maybe this is just me, but when i first heard it i heard, "i've come to see the wrinkled mess beneath their well-pressed clothes." made sense to me, but i could be wrong.
this is one of my all-time favorite songs. if you guys like electric president, you should check out Radical Face, the guy from electric president's other band. it's equally as good. |
