I think the song is about how we conform to society, hence "the racing rats". How we carry along with our lives is meaningless because in the long run nothing we accomplish can make such a significant impact, not even a "plane falling from the sky".

I think this whole verse is more existential than religious. It sounds like an outcry as an individual, to fathom the meaning of living on earth. Sort of asking the question that as days pass we continue striving to live, but for what purpose?
The perspective to me, seems like hes trying to explain this to someone. Perhaps a significant person in his life. |

People are imagining it a little off...
He hits the ground in "Cowboys", hes falling right after the last line "Here I lie" and hits the ground when the song starts to outro to "Negative Space". "Negative Space" his him lying on the ground and sort of a "life flashing before his eyes" sorta in his own universe still. The "Preist and the Matador" is when the real world starts to consume him then he dies. |

Those of you who thought it was about religion, you're right.
It's describing how Buddy (lead vocals) has tried to become a christian and how it failed for him. Judging from the song's lyrics with phrases like "cross turned upside down", I'm assuming he practiced catholicism or a similar denomination.
But yea, a very deep song. |
