Many years ago, (20?), on his last show before Christmas, Letterman played this song to scenes of actual people arriving, presumably home, to loved ones in bus/train stations and/or airport. It was poignant, one of the most moving "videos" I've ever seen. Does anyone else remember it? |

| The Beatles – Let It Be Lyrics

Shortly after my own mother's passing, I was reading a book about coping with loss. Several "famous" folks shared their own stories about their battles with grief. Paul McCartney explained that when he was going through a particularly troubling time in his life, one night, his departed mother came to him, clear as can be, and said to him, "Let it be." He explained that afterward, he was filled with a peaceful, almost blissful sense of well-being. He wrote the song about his mother, Mary, coming to him and the rest is history.
Independent of this, other people have told me of lost loved ones coming to them during the night, very clear and present, and of having a more settled, peaceful sense of being afterwards. Although I still wait and hope for some sign from my own mother, Paul's sharing of this experience, and recording it in song is emotional yet helpful. The beautiful song was inspired by something no longer of this world. |

| Gordon Lightfoot – Sit Down Young Stranger Lyrics

It's beautifully sung; the lyrics seem to imply that a young man has returned home from travel and school and has different notions about the world than those held by his parents. It's sympathetic to the son and to the parents; he's young and idealistic, they are work weary and practical. I struggle with the last several stanzas, particularly the last two lines. Any suggestions? |

Take it easy on Diego, bro. Freedom Lover, great analysis; it evokes both the change in the southern way of life and a time that's now virtually lost. Clever historical references in spare wording. Great banjo licks here and there. |

Distinctive, soulful, amazing. The beat, the words, the voice make the adrenaline pump. The video is incredible. |

Smilez, nice articulate interpretation. Another variation on its meaning for me. Probably sort of an innocent perspective, based on personal experience interpretation . . .
He was in a relationship with a white bread, wholesome girl who was good for him but couldn't overcome his personal demons in order to maintain the relationship. He misses her but his bent toward self-destruction (alcohol, drugs, womanizing, fast cars, unwillingness to take responsibility) superceded his ability to be in a healthy relationship, thus his free falling, living an unhealthy life on his own terms. Hopefully just giving into his impulsive, instant gratification lifestyle until he matures (leaving the world for a while) and figures out who he is. It's much easier, personally, to take a gentle interpretation of the lyrics. Hopefully, she gets over him, goes on and finds someone who appreciates her or he realizes the mistake he's made and tries to make it right.
The L.A. references are lots of fun and the word play clever; loves her mama, Jesus, Elvis, horses; the imagery he creates using the word vampires. Good stuff, even if this listener prefers the vanilla, midwestern interpretation. |

shanejoy, I'm so sorry to read of your loss. It's an experience I can relate to; I played just before the services began at my mom's funeral. She was a wonderful, hardworking, beautiful mother, but had no self-confidence and wasn't treated that well by the world. It's been two years and although time does ease the pain, this song brings tears rolling down my cheeks. Here's to our mothers, in the arms of the angels. Take care. Peace to you on your journey. |

| Vince Gill – Go Rest High On That Mountain Lyrics

We played it at the conclusion of my mother's funeral services. Its lyrics express so perfectly the overwhelming emotions felt at the loss of a loved one. "Oh how we cried the day you left us" helped us feel less alone and lost during this very personal yet universal experience. Mom worked hard and faced much adversity; the song helped express hope that she is now with the angels and feels less weary, now happy and at peace. Love lives on. |
