Beirut – My Night With the Prostitute from Marseille Lyrics 16 years ago
I didn't interpret this as being metaphorical. I think he spends the night with the prostitute not because he's horny, but because he's lonely.

"and now outside you see the waves in her eyes
and I, I won't mind what you decide to swear by"

"and now outside I see your eyes meet the sky
and I, I don't mind what you decide to swear by"

These lines seem to depict a certain sense of admiration because he finds this woman to be beautiful. When he says, "I don't mind what you decide to swear by," he is saying that he doesn't care what she thinks. Even if to her, he is just another customer, his experience is much deeper than that.

"and I, I won't lie, I kept you here tonight"

This line could mean a couple different things. For one, it could be his admission that although he feels a connection with her, she has no reason to be with him tonight besides money. But the way I first thought of it was that she stayed the whole night. She was going to leave to either go to sleep or find another customer or whatever prostitutes do, but he wanted to sleep with her. And I mean, actually sleep. After the sex. He wants this because he feels alone and being with a beautiful woman, he feels connected to someone. And it's important to him. He loves this woman. And not in the way that you love a friend or girlfriend or boyfriend or spouse or family member. It's just a sort of adoration and thankfulness for making him feel less alone, if only for the night.

M. Ward – For Beginners Lyrics 16 years ago
How has no one else commented on this song yet?! I heard this the other day and I can't stop listening to it. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and it's impossible for me to listen to this without smiling. I was hoping someone had some idea as to what it's about, because I'm not good at interpreting lyrics. But I'll give it a shot.

This song is based on metaphors and it all seems kinda vague to me, so I think interpretations will vary a lot based on the listener.

"When you're absolute beginners
Its a panoramic view"

This is basically saying that when you're young, you look at the future and there are so many possibilities. You feel like you can do anything you want and it's exciting.

"From her majesty Mt. Zion
And the kingdom is for You"

A very brief Google search revealed to me (and these facts could be incorrect, so feel free to fix them) that Mt. Zion is considered to be a holy place in Judeo-Christian beliefs. Christians believe it is the place where Jesus will appear on Judgment Day. So, as far as the song goes, I think Mt. Zion would either represent some great, long-term dream/goal or the end of one's life. The second line is continuing off the idea presented in the first two lines, that all these possibilities are yours and you can do whatever you want on the way to your personal Mt. Zion, whatever that may represent to you.

"When you tumble upon that valley
Shock of sparrow Line the stairs
When the arrows Start descending
Then they scatter everywhere"

I don't understand the second line. But the first line mentions a valley, which makes me think of a low point in one's life. Seeing the arrows descend and scatter everywhere could be a metaphor for beginning to see the bad things in life and realizing that maybe it's not all you thought it would be.

"On a bookshelf in Caledonia
Sits the map of passageways
Best to stumble upon Mt. Zion
To behold the natural gate"

These lines make me think of someone young finding some maps and just going on an adventure, not knowing what to expect. That could be literally, or figuratively, in which case it would just represent setting out to begin your life. The last two lines tell of the ultimate destination, either a particular goal or death or something else, as I stated above.

"They say the original sinners
Never felt a drop of pain
Until that second in the garden
Then they felt it each and every day"

I think these people that are in pain are people who are older, have experience, and have seen bad things happen. They know that life is difficult, and thus they feel pain. If you believe the Mt. Zion in this song represents death, then these people could be angels. The garden being heaven or whatever else comes after death.

"So draw back your bows you hunters
Who have never felt that flame
But the absolute beginners
They are safe in the shade for today..."

I love this stanza. It's beautiful. The hunters are drawing back their bows, so they are fighting. Yet the beginners are safe. I think that's because the hunters are protecting the beginners (young, naïve people). Again, depending on what Mt. Zion means to you, this stanza could mean different things. If you think of Mt. Zion as an objective in life, and you see the hunters as older people with experience, then it's simply about the elders protecting young people. It is the people who have already experience life that become parents, raise children, educate younger people, etc. And I think as the "beginners" are sitting in the shade, they are seeing the "hunters" fight and are learning to "fight," which represents them learning how to get through life, defeat obstacles, an accomplish great things. If you think of Mt. Zion as death and the gateway to heaven, then these hunters represent angels watching over the people on Earth. Either way, it's a beautiful song.

I doubt my interpretation is anything like what M. Ward intended the song to be about, but I think that's the beauty of music. It means something different to everyone. But I am eager to hear other people's thoughts on what this is about!

Explosions in the Sky – With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept Lyrics 18 years ago
This song makes me think of someone dying. In the beginning, his life is perfectly normal and he's happy. The silence is where he finds out he is ill and will die soon. He is speechless and doesn't know how to react. Then, it gets very loud very suddenly. This is the point where all his memories come rushing back to him and he gets very angry that it's all about to come an end. The end could either be his death or the point when all of his emotions are too much and he simply bursts into tears at the thought of dying.

I think my explanation fits the title well, too. The man is poor because he has been robbed of his life, and it also deals with his memories of his previously happy life.

The Stone Roses – Sally Cinnamon Lyrics 18 years ago
This is not necessarily lesbian. That's what it seems like and it is most likely what it's about, but the lyrics are ambiguous. The girl whose jacket he took the letter from is the recipient of the letter (Sally Cinnamon) and not the sender. At the end, "Sent to her from heaven" could be speaking of Sally's boyfriend. The lines "Sally Cinnamon / You're her world" could then be saying that the boyfriend is Sally's world. I think the lesbian idea is probably the intended meaning, but I think it is intentionally ambiguous.

The Cribs – You and I Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with babelo. I think by "taking the road less traveled," the narrator is suggesting that he wants to make love to an animal despite the fact that it is somewhat unusual. When he says "We'll die," I think he is saying that his girlfriend would kill him if she saw him engaging in such acts with the animal.

The first 23 seconds of this song just might be the most incredible intro ever. Just hearing that makes me want to cry.

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 18 years ago
To irisheyes4683:

I truly pity you. To say that Jesus is the only person that can provide that kind of love is just sad. One day you'll fall in love, and then you'll understand exactly what I'm saying. When I'm feeling upset, Jesus doesn't comfort me. If you truly love someone, though, just being near them is the greatest feeling in the world.

Anyway, this song is absolutely incredible. And here's my opinion on the Beatles: Yes, the Beatles were much more important to music than Oasis and that's what makes them a great band. I will say that I like Oasis more because I enjoy their music more than that of the Beatles. To be honest, I don't really enjoy listening to the Beatles. Yes, they were probably the most important band of all time, but not necessarily the most enjoyable to listen to.

Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics 18 years ago
As soon as I heard the third verse, I thought of Grace Cathedral Hill by The Decemberists.

Brothers On A Hotel Bed:
"On the back of a motorbike
With your arms outstretched, trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
And the city where we still reside"

Grace Cathedral Hill:
"And the world may be long for you
But it'll never belong to you
But on a motorbike
When all the city lights
Blind your eyes tonight
Are you feeling better now?"

Death Cab for Cutie – Your Heart Is an Empty Room Lyrics 18 years ago
The guitar on this song is absolutely amazing. And when I say that, I mean that of all the songs I've heard in my life, this probably has the best sound to the guitar. I didn't really notice it at first, but then I went on a really long car ride. I was sitting in the backseat listening to my iPod when this song came on. It was pretty late at night, too, so it was dark out. Anyway, I just stared up at the black, starry sky and listened to this song and I just cried. For some reason, the music just kind of clicked with the situation. It's hard to explain, but I left this song on repeat for hours and just stared out the window. That was one of the best nights of my life. That is why I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate this kind of music. Rap can't make you cry. A teenage pop star is not going to write a song that will make you completely rethink your life. The entire Plans album is a work of genius, both lyrically and musically.

Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 18 years ago
"If I could open my arms
And span the length of the isle of Manhattan
I'd bring it to where you are
Making a lake of the East River and Hudson

And if I could open my mouth
Wide enough for a marching band to march out
They would make your name sing
And bend through alleys and bounce off all the buildings"

In those verses, he is expressing his love for the girl in the song.

"I wish we could open our eyes
To see in all directions at the same time
Oh, what a beautiful view
If you were never aware of what was around you"

He isn't sure how she feels about him, so this verse is a metaphor for him wishing he was "aware of what was around [him]" and thinking of how great it would be to know ("Oh, what a beautiful view").

"And it is true what you say
That I live like a hermit in my own head
But when the sun shines again
I'll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in"

He lives like a hermit because he is alone, since he is too afraid to do anything about his love. The second two lines are him saying that if she loved him, he would no longer feel alone and would want to be with her.

"Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole"

His doubts about how she feels are slowly growing.

"Just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound"

Again, his doubts are slowly overwhelming him. He is comforted to think that he doesn't have to do anything about his love yet and that he can just wait and see how things unfold.

"But while you debate half empty or half full"

He's trying to decide how she feels about him.

"It slowly rises, your love is going to drown"

Eventually, he becomes so doubtful that he doesn't care about her anymore. At this point, he wishes he had done something earlier because he realizes it's too late.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the most incredible song ever written. When most people are asked their favorite song of all time, they give some bullshit answer. Take Stairway to Heaven, for example. Yes, it is a great song musically, but can it make me cry? No. Not only is the music in this song absolutely amazing, but the lyrics make me feel so many emotions all at the same time that it overwhelms me and I could just sit here and cry. This song doesn't have one specific meaning. It means so many things at once, and that's what makes it so incredible.

I'm a freshman in high school, and this song makes me realize how great this stage of my life is. I hate to think that in a few years, it will all be over. Just being able to hang out with friends and not really give a shit about anything in the world. I wish time could just stop and I could live my current life forever.

In addition, I have recently fallen in love, and this song is extremely bittersweet. I've had crushes on plenty of girls before, but this is different. I can tell I'm actually in love. At this point, there isn't any chance of me having a relationship with her, though. Anyway, when I hear this song, I picture myself laying next to her by a lake just staring up at the stars and I wish things could be that way. To be able to just be with her and focus on that and have nothing else to worry about.

Several comments have stated that the song is about losing your virginity, and I completely agree with that, too. Most people that don't like to think of the song having that meaning are simply thinking of sex in the usual way. Too many people just sleep around for physical pleasure. Losing your virginity is something that should be done with someone you are completely in love with, and not for pleasure. This song is romanticizing something that is often taken too lightly. "You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth." When you have sex, you are losing your innocence, or youthfulness. "We're not the same, we're different tonight." Their relationship is reaching an entirely different level. "And you know you're never sure, but you're sure you could be right if you held yourself up to the light." You might feel nervous, but everything will be okay. "We'll crucify the insincere tonight." By giving up your virginity, one of the most valuable things you have, you are showing how sincerely you care about this person. "We'll feel it all tonight." They will consummate their relationship. "The indescribable moments of your life, tonight." That night will be the defining moment of your life together. "Believe in me as I believe in you tonight." Trust me and the love I feel for you.

Also, this song is about living for the moment. Forget about the past and don't worry about the future, just enjoy your life right now. Go hang out with some friends, try something new, just don't sit around and watch life pass you by. If you were to die tomorrow, would you regret your past decisions? Would you wish you had cared enough to do something with your life? Would you wish you had called that friend of yours who you hadn't spoken to in a year? Would you wish you had told the person you love how you felt? Don't miss the boat on life.

This song represents the moment you fall in love. For me, I gradually began to like someone more and more and then it just suddenly got to the point where I would look at her and think to myself that if I could have one wish, it would be that she would love me. My life would be complete. I would never need anything else in the world.

Lastly (and this is a bit of a stretch, but it makes sense to me), I think this could also be about trying to make someone happy who is about to die. For example, if someone you love finds out that they have cancer and only have 6 months left to live, this song could be a description of a night out that you plan with them, in the hopes that maybe they'll temporarily forget about their problems and enjoy the last moments of their life. "Believe that life can change, that you're not stuck in vain." Someone who knows they're about to die would probably feel like any efforts to enjoy themselves would be in vain, since they'll die anyway. "And you know you're never sure, but you're sure you could be right if you held yourself up to the light." They don't know that this experience will make them feel any better, but if there's a chance, they should go for it. "Believe in the resolute urgency of now." You don't have much time left, let's hurry up and have some fun. "We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight." It doesn't seem right for someone to have to be in that situation, but they'll try to feel joy again. "The indescribable moments of your life tonight, the impossible is possible tonight." Although it doesn't seem possible, tonight will be the one night of your life that you will never forget, no matter what. "Believe in me as I believe in you tonight." I believe you can still be happy, so just believe that I can help you.

Anyway, I think Billy Corgan is about as close to God as any human can possibly be. This song briefly and beautifully stirs up so many deep emotions in me, it just amazes me. Also, both musically and lyrically, Stand Inside Your Love perfectly describes pure love, something I could never find the words to explain.

I absolutely love this song. It's basically saying, "I hate the way the world works and I really don't care about meeting anyone's expectations. I'm gonna do whatever I want, and if you don't like it, you can go to hell."

The Smashing Pumpkins – Doomsday Clock Lyrics 18 years ago
Here are the correct lyrics:

is everyone afraid?
is everyone ashamed?
they're running towards their holes, to find out
apocalyptic means are lost among our dead
a message to our friends to get out
there's wages on this fear
oh so clear
depends on what you'll pay to hear
they're bound to kill us all
in whitewashed halls
their jackals lick their paws
please don't stop
it's lonely at the top
these lonely days
when will they ever stop?
this doomsday clock ticking in my heart
not broken
i love life every day
in each and every way
Kafka would be proud, to find out
i'm certain of the end
it's the means that has me spooked
it takes an unknown truth to get out
i'm guessing i'm born free, silly me
i was meant to beg from my knees
please don't stop
it's lonely at the top
these lonely days
when will they ever stop?
this doomsday clock ticking in my heart
these lonely days when will they ever stop?
we gotta dig in, gas masks on
wait in the sunshine, all bug-eyed
if this is living?
sakes alive!
well then they can't win
no one survives
is everyone afraid?
you should be ashamed
apocalyptic screams
mean nothing to the dead
kissing that 'ol sun
to know all there is
come on, last call
you should want it all
ah, it's lonely at the top
these lonely days
when will they ever stop
this doomsday clock ticking in my heart
these lonely days
when will they ever stop
this ticking in my heart
is everyone afraid?

The Cribs – Girls Like Mystery Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is a guy expressing his frustration over a girl who apparently does not want him to know how she feels about him. I'm in love with this girl who seems to be playing sort of mental game with me. Half the time, she's nice and friendly to me, and half the time she doesn't even want me near her. She just tells me to go away and starts complaining. I think this might have to do with the fact that she knows I love her. She used to constantly tell me how much she hated me until we talked it over, and now she insists that she doesn't dislike me at all, and I believe her. Anyway, it is incredibly frustrating and I think this song is about a guy in this situation and how miserable he feels.

The Decemberists – Clementine Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the best love song ever written. When I hear Colin sing, "And I watch as you sleep / So indelibly deep / And I hum to you, 'Sweet Clementine,'" I cannot stop myself from crying. Not only are the lyrics amazing, the music fits so perfectly. One of the very minor things that makes this so incredible is the way it was recorded. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the recording is slightly different in some way. It's almost like a muffled type of sound, but not really. Am I the only person that hears this?

The Smashing Pumpkins – Stand Inside Your Love Lyrics 18 years ago
The girl in this song does not love him. It doesn't say that in the lyrics, but the song definitely has a depressing feel to it. Anyway, this song perfectly sums up my feelings for someone. I want to use this song to express how I feel, but I can't because there is no way she would understand. I'm a freshman in high school and many people say that people my age can't actually feel love. I don't believe that, though, because I have liked people in the past and this is completely different. I can't stop thinking about her and the line, "Who wouldn't be the one you love?" applies perfectly, although I have never felt that way about anyone else. She doesn't like me, though, and I've only known her for about 3 months. What makes it worse is that she is going out with someone who has previously attempted to take advantage of her and, judging by his previous relationships, does not really care about her. I know this doesn't seem like an interpretation of the song, but if you've been in this situation before, you'll know exactly how perfect this song is.

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not sure, what this song means, but the way it sounds just makes me want to cry every time. It's such a perfect song. I think the Decemberists are probably the greatest band of all time. Anyway, here's my guess as to what it means:

I'm sure this is wrong, but I think each of the three verses as somehow relating to the relationship between the narrator and the person he loves.

I think the first stanza is a metaphor. Your ankle links two things, your foot and your leg. this allows you to walk. The narrator is saying that their relationship is like that, since it is what is joining the two of them and it keeps them going through their lives and any troubles that they have.

The second stanza could be about the way you respect someone you feel a bond with. The girl felt a strong bond with her uncle because he was a family member, even though she never knew him. Because of this, even when she found his secret hideout, her feelings of respect and admiration for her uncle led her to not reveal his secrets. This is how the narrator feels about the girl. He loves and cares for her, and would never do anything to harm her (telling secrets, etc.).

The third stanza is comparing their relationship to those she had with other people, saying that the narrator is just another one of those boys, but that he recognizes what they did wrong and that their relationship will not end the way the others did.

These are the words that led me to my conclusion: "This is the story of..." It seems to me that their relationship is metaphorically the story of her ankle, her uncle, or her previous lovers.

Anyway, this is without a doubt one of the most incredible songs I have ever heard. This is the only song that could rival Everlong by the Foo Fighters (the live, acoustic version from Skin and Bones) as the greatest love song ever written. The Decemberists definitely don't get nearly enough credit from most people.

Social Distortion – Story of My Life Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is basically about how he didn't give a shit about anything when he was young and he regrets wasting those years of his life. I'm a freshman in high school and I think these are the two stanzas that mean the most to me:

"And the girl in the front of the room,
So close yet so far y'know she never seemed to ntice
That this silly schoolboy crush
Wasn't just pretend."

"So I sit at the edge of my bed
I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw love song.
Wonerin' 'bout what you're doin' now
And when you're comin' back."

The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is not meaningful or deep, it is simply a hilarious and incredibly fun song, especially live. I can't believe people take it seriously. It is so ridiculous there's no way it can be serious. I saw it live and people were screaming and laughing. He went into a long speech about how when the audience screams (the whale eats them), he needed more "lamenting." Two people in a whale costume came out and ate all the band members except Colin Meloy. He sang these lines:

Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
But, oh, what providence
What divine intelligence
That you should survive
As well as me

When he sang that, he was singing a weak, terrified voice and it was obvious the whole song was a joke.

I think the line "I have a sequin for an eye" is actually written from the child's perspective. Sequins are small, so if the child has small eyes, it would mean it's a baby or fetus, which would imply abortion.

She Wants Revenge – Tear You Apart Lyrics 18 years ago
I'll describe the situation I'm in, because I think the song describes that situation very well.

Basically, there is a girl that I am friends with, but I like her A LOT, but I am afraid to ask her out because if she said no or the relationship ended suddenly, then our relationship might be awkward and we might not be friends anymore. Anyway, there is a part that says:

And the whisper or handshake sending a sign

I think this is important because in a way, it's how I feel. I want her to know my feelings without telling her directly, but I don't really know how.

When she walked in, he froze up, believe its the fright

I feel a bit nervous around her because I recently met her and I want her to like me, but I'm afraid I'll say something stupid to her.

Obsessed about it, heavy for the next two days

I am constantly thinking about her and don't know how to stop.

It's only just a crush, it'll go away
It's just like all the others it'll go away
Or maybe this is danger and he just don't know
You pray it all away but it continues to grow

I have had many crushes and I am hoping this is one of those that will soon pass, but I feel doubts and I don't think these feelings will go away.

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to fucking tear you apart

Some people think that could be sexual desire, but I hate to think of it that way. I think it describes how I just love to be around her and I want her company all the time. When he says, "I want to fucking tear you apart," I think it describes how I hate these feelings and wish we could just be good friends, but I know I'll always have these feelings that I want to let out.

I doubt this is exactly what She Wants Revenge was thinking when they wrote this song, but I feel like this best relates to me and I think that's what matters.

My opinion about this song is different from most of you. The original version is a good song, nothing more. It is not great and the Foo Fighters have much better songs. However, I have the live, acoustic version and it is one of the most incredible things I have ever heard. Honestly, it may just be the greatest song ever written. I will try to see them live in Charlotte this year, and I cannot wait to hear this song. The Foo Fighters are the best modern rock band, hands down.

Against Me! – Thrash Unreal Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is absolutely fantastic. It is one of my favorite songs this year and the lyrics are simple, yet meaningful. Basically, it is about a girl who does nothing party but party, drink, take drugs, etc. She often doesn't enjoy her lifestyle, but it's all she knows. By the time she's 40, she is in a bad position. She is alone, she can no longer behave the way she used to, and she can't make much money. The saddest part is that in the end, she doesn't realize what she was missing out on all along.

The Fratellis – Whistle for the Choir Lyrics 18 years ago
This is exactly what I'm feeling, so I can relate to it easily. The only difference is I'll never meet this person, but whatever. It also sounds awesome, so it's one of my favorite songs. Anyway, here's my interpretation:

"Well it's a big big city and it's always the same"
There are so many people this guy could be with but he doesn't care for any of them.

"Can never be too pretty tell me your name"
He sees her and thinks she's very pretty, but he is also attracted to her on an emotional level, despite the fact that they've never met (It's love at first sight).

"Is it out of line if I were to be bold and say "Would you be mine"?"
He thinks it's awkward to ask someone out who doesn't even know him, but he truly loves her.

"Because I may be a beggar and you maybe the queen"
He is just an average guy and she is famous.

"I know I maybe on a downer I’m still ready to dream"
Because he is in love with her, he is willing to try to win her over despite the fact that the odds are against him.

"Now it's 3 o'clock the time is just the time it takes for you to talk"
He listens to her talk for a long time but doesn't mind because simply hearing her voice and listening to what she is saying mesmerizes him.

"So if you're lonely"
She is alone in her life and he realizes this and is surprised.

"Why'd you say you’re not lonely?"
She said she didn't feel lonely because she didn't want to be with him and she thought that if she said that, he would give her up.

"Oh you’re a silly girl, I know I heard it so"
He realizes that she is trying to avoid being with him. He is upset that she doesn't understand that he is actually in love with her and not just physically attracted to her.

"It's just like you to come and go"
He is upset that she won't give him a chance.

"And know me, no you don't even know me"
He can't believe that she would leave him without even getting to know him.

"You’re so sweet to try, oh my, you caught my eye"
When he says, "You're so sweet to try," he is imagining what she is trying to tell him. He still won't give up, though, because he knows she is the one person he wants to stay with.

"A girl like you ’s just irresistible"
She is irresistible.

"Well it's a big big city and the lights are all out"
Of all the people he could be with, he is now ignoring them and focusing on this girl.

"But it's much as I can do you know to figure you out"
He's doing all he can to get to know her better.

"And I must confess, my hearts so broke in pieces"
He can't believe that he will probably never be with the girl he loves

"And my heads a mess"
He is going crazy with heartbreak

"And it's 4 in the morning, and I’m walking along"
He thinks about her 24/7.

"Beside the ghost of every drinker here who has ever done wrong"
He feels like he has made some mistake that he imagines many others have also made. He doesn't know what he has done wrong, but he continues to blame himself for losing her.

"And it's you, woo hoo"
He is being semi-sarcastic. He says "woo hoo" because he is excited to be around her, but he also says it sarcastically, meaning: "Oh, I'm with you, but who cares? It's about to end."

"That's got me going crazy for the things you do"
This is him saying that he is still madly in love with her.

"So if you’re crazy, I don't care you amaze me"
He thinks she is crazy for going back to a life of loneliness, but he still wants to be with her.

"But you’re a stupid girl, oh me, oh my, you talk"
She is stupid for not giving love a chance.

"I die, you smile, you laugh, I cry"
When she talks, he is reminded both how much he loves her and that they'll never be together. He is becoming very upset and she is just laughing because she doesn't understand how someone could love her without knowing her.

"And only, a girl like you could be lonely"
Only someone like her could be lonely because she is so unwilling to fall in love.

"And it's a crying shame, if you would think the same"
It is a shame that his love went to waste. If only she had loved him, too...

"A boy like me's just irresistible"
He is wishing she would love him back.

"So if you're lonely"
He is repeating the fact that she is lonely.

"Why'd you say you're not lonely?"
He doesn't know why she would try to get rid of him.

"Oh you’re a silly girl, I know I heard it so"
She is silly for being so unwilling to give him a chance despite the fact that she is lonely.

"It's just like you to come and go"
He is again saying that he should've known she would be so stubborn.

"And know me, no you don't even know me"
She still barely knows him.

"You’re so sweet to try, oh my, you caught my eye"
The way she acts is telling him that he never had a chance with her, but he realizes now that that he will never be with his true love.

"A girl like you's just irresistible"
Again, he is saying how much he loves her.

I know my explanation wasn't very good and somewhat redundant, but you get the idea. This is an incredible song. It states how I feel better than I could ever explain it.
