In this case, Sufjan has said that this was a song about his best friend. Check it out live, there is a video on youtube where he personally addresses this as a time when him and his friend were at camp and they saw this huge wasp and they ran and swam across the lake to camp, and didn't come back to the palisades. But then again, he does change the story quite a alot. As we all know, Sufjan uses A. Biblical B. Mythological and C. Historical references in his lyrics. Sometimes he talks from his point of view, sometimes from a womans, a little boys, an old mans, a dead persons. etc. He sort of conglomerates these references with his personal experiences. Unless he says "This song is about me" we can never know. To me, this is a song about appreciation, maybe romance gone wrong, and as always nostalgia. |
