Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 18 years ago
This song definitely is about gay sex.Every object or person mentioned in this song is either reffering to a penis or a blowjob. It certainly isn't coincidental that all the things he mentions are long, thin or hard (bone, pencil, sword).

"You walk into the room
With your pencil in your hand"

---> pencil? (=penis!)

"You raise up your head
And you ask, "Is this where it is?" "

---> He kneels down to give someone a blowjob,
looks up and asks if this is the right spot

"And you say, "Impossible"
As he hands you a bone "

---> bone? (=penis!)

"You have many contacts
Among the lumberjacks "

"You've been with the professors
And they've all liked your looks "

---> No need to explain

"Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you
And then he kneels
He crosses himself
And then he clicks his high heels
And without further notice
He asks you how it feels "

---> This one makes me laugh. If you replace sword with penis you'll understand it

"Now you see this one-eyed midget
Shouting the word "NOW" "

---> one-eyed-midget? (=penis!)

"Give me some milk
Or else go home""

---> this is also very funny

Well I hope you understand now, who the young man in the title is...

Bob Dylan – Isis Lyrics 18 years ago
The meaning of this song is so obvious. A young dude marries a woman but don't recognize her value to his live.
He goes far away just to find material treasures but is obviously dissapointed. He goes all the way to find some jewels but the true treasure - his beloved Isis - was always
right by his side.

Bob Dylan – Shelter from the Storm Lyrics 18 years ago
This song has propably the best lyrics i've ever seen.

The most important thing in this song is imo that "she" is always a different person. The song shows the different phases of the protagonists life and the important women, that give him shelter from the storm (security).

'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

-> This propably describes his birth;"Come in" means coming into life, from the wilderness as a creature void of form (a baby). In this case "she" is his mother

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

-> Here he is a young man; He leaves his mother and promises her to be a good person and protecting his girl from violence; "She" is in this case love.

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved.
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

-> Here he found a girl but the relationship is merely sexual (not as word was spole between us);
"Imagining a place where it's always safe and warm" and "Come In" are likely to refer to the female genital.

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail,
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

-> This ones a bit harder to interpret. Either he's a soldier in a war or a hard working guy

As the song continues the "she" more and more turns out to be something spiritual/metaphysical. During his lifetime he goes similar paths as Jesus does (crown of thorns in particular), he meets and leaves different places and women and in the last few verses "she" is no woman anymore. He meets persons (the old man, new born babies) and soon finds out that love/shelter isn't merely something physical (while he keeps getting older).

The last verse is by far my favourite one:

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

-> No matter where he is, he'll die sooner or later ("i'm bound to cross the lines"). He still hasn't found the immortal beauty, that he expected to find in a certain person but he wants to find it somewhere else (someday i'll make it mine). It would be so easy if he could go back to a time when god came into being and
with him the shelter he seeks.

My interpretaion is a bit hard to understand and even harder to explain completely but the point in this song is (at least i believe it) that security can never be fully provided by a living person, wheter it's you girlfriend or your wive or your mother...security only takes place in a mental/metaphysical level. That's what the protagonist learns during this song. Even though he knows that one day everything will be over and that he never find the true beauty, there is still something (spriritual) that can give him shelter.
Since Dylan more and more became a christ at that time, it's not impossible that he thougth about Mary, when writing the last verse.

Bob Dylan – Queen Jane Approximately Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about Joan Beaz

"Jane" sounds like a mix of Joan and Baez (Joan was also considered the "Queen" of folk music).

He basically sings "when you're sick of all this repetition, you can see me, Queen Jane";
So when Jane (Joan) doesn't want to repeat herself yet again (stop singing always the same stuff), she gets the chance to see him again. The line "Won't you come
see me, Queen Jane" is thus only a rhetorical, sarcastic question. He explains their different positions with a bunch of surreal images but knows that she'll never come to him - that's why the Question is put in a negative point of view (WON'T you come see me,...)

Bob Dylan – Drifter's Escape Lyrics 18 years ago
The drifter is Dylan himself. He describes his status in the years of 65 - 66. The bolt of Lightning is his motorcycle accident, which he "used" to escape

Bob Dylan – Jokerman Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about Dylan himself. The Joker used as an alter ego of Dylan is nothing new in his songwriting process - just think about All Along The
Watchtower. Biographical songs with biblical references
were also written before (Shelter From The Storm).

"You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing"

The "Hurricane" is imo the 2nd world war, it was the time when Dylan was born

"Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister."

Dylan was (and still is) a "manipulator of crowds" and
a "Dream Twister" (especially when he became a rockstar in the mid 60ties)

"Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants,
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response."

That's about Dylan intentionally not doing what his audience wants (again mid 60ties reference)
