Snow Patrol – This Isn't Everything You Are Lyrics 14 years ago
Gary has said that this is about "three stories." I think the first verse is about someone who's in a bad relationship, who feels trapped and doesn't know how to get out. It's someone who stays because they can't leave or they feel pressured to stay despite being unhappy.

The second, "You've been up all night, (...) There's strangers everywhere" I think is about an alcoholic who hasn't realized it yet, or someone going through some serious self-destructive behavior and hiding it under "partying."

The third is the saddest to me. It's about someone who has just lost a loved one and missed the chance to say goodbye. The theme of the song is that no matter how bad it is, it will be better. This sadness, this difficulty that dominates your life isn't all you are. I think this is a very beautiful song.

Yellowcard – Five Becomes Four Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know exactly what the song is written to mean, and I don't want to --what it means to me is so much more poignant. My parents had 5 kids (I'm the 4th) and we all got along great for a long time, except that one of my older sisters kinda lost it a few years ago. She broke all ties with us, took a lot of money from people I care about and essentially broke my parents hearts because she's mentally ill. This song is so much like our relationship that it hurts.

Certainly *I* never asked to be the one she attempted to recontact after I'd decided that I was done with her. I never decided to be the one who has to prove that my parent's children aren't all dysfunctional, never asked to have every move scrutinized by her crazy standard, and it has been harder for me and she has tried to hurt me. And I've struggled a lot with the "why". But this song sums it up so well. I'm *done* with my crazy sibling who ran away.

And five of us have somehow become four.

Mute Math – Typical Lyrics 18 years ago
Just because the band is catholic doesn't mean that the songs are. That's oversimplification. This isn't a religious song. I don't see any ties to jesus or god in those lyrics. I see a fight against conformity (break the spell of the typical/because it's dragging me down). I think that seeing god there is just projection of one's own faith into something that has no religious ties.

Collective Soul – Adored Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was the one that really jumped at me on the new CD. Others were good, but this one made me glad I decided to listen to the CD all the way through in one sitting. It's so soothing, so uplifting and reassuring.

So utterly Collective Soul. This is one more reason why they rock so solidly.

Our Lady Peace – Life Lyrics 18 years ago
The anthem for people with problems! I don't mean to make it sound so bad, but it sorta is. How many times have you been betrayed, forgotten, ignored, stared at, let down, felt weak, hurt? We all feel like this, at various times. But as bad as it gets, as messed up as it gets--we're alive.

The end is the part that really gets to me. It's like this girl who, instead of embracing life and accepting it, seems to turn to drugs. "She gets high, she gets lost
She gets drowned by the cost, Twice a day, every week." But she's still alive, and it's like he's telling her that life is still there, waiting for her. That things can get better. It's sad and yet so hopeful that it tears my heart every time. Your life can suck so bad it makes vacuums blush. But you're still alive.

Our Lady Peace – In Repair Lyrics 18 years ago
The album is based on an interesting book, but I always thought this song outside that realm. The song's very good, but I guess I always listened to the bit "we're always in repair" in a different way. Lots of songs look at the concept of being "broken." Our Lady Peace isn't just broken. They're in repair.

For that matter, in some small ways, we're all broken. But it's easier to just say that you're "in repair."

Blue October – Drop Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's a little of both. He's been trying to go clean, but, withdrawal or whatever led him to start, is causing him pain, mental or physical. So he's going back to the acid--"I think it's rather time that you ease your pain". But he knows, ultimately, that it won't help. It isn't a way to ease his pain. But because it's the only thing he knows how to help himself, he self medicates with acid. And it's what he'll keep doing until he decides he has to fix himself.

On a personal side note, having chronic back pain, I love this song. I self medicate as well (though not with acid) and I listen to this song sometimes to remind myself that self medicating isn't going to help anything in the end. It's a very beautiful song, for an acid trip!
