While I agree that the lyrics can be applied to all world leaders, there a few things here that would suggest Dry Drunk Emperor is specifically about Bush. The "gold cross cross jock skull and bones" and "gog of magog" are both references to the secret society W. was a member of during his Yale years. |

I didn't think much of this song until I heard it live - managed to move a buddy of mine, who had never heard TVotR before, to tears - and believe me, he's not the type to get all emotional over nothing. |

I always thought he was saying "Picking apples for the kings and queens and thing I'LL NEVER SEE" which, to me, sounds so much more hopeless and depressing. |

I agree with most of these interpretations. But a thought just occruered to me. Could it be about sex between a black man and a white woman back when that was still taboo? I mean, the first thing I think when I hear "Wolf Like Me" is the book "Black Like Me." And then there's the line about hanging trees...
I haven't convinced myself that what I wrote above is what it's about, but it is possible... |

I always thought this song was about encountering a doomed ghost who was once a friend of yours. Then later, realizing that you're dead yourself, in hell, and with the devil (The Man Who Sold the World). |

While your analysis is well thought out. I don't think this song should be written off as a political statment. I can't say what it is - there just seems to be more there. |

This song always reminds me of the last season...really the last 3 episodes of the show Six Feet Under. (Don't read anymore if you don't want anything spoiled) One of the main characters, an artists named Claire, falls in love with this really average mundane guy, Ted (or maybe it was Tom). She's used to dating artists and hipsters and fuck ups, where as Ted/Tom is a republican, a college graduate, and a lawyer. Claire being able to love some one so square showed how much she matured. |
