it's sort of like...a contradiction isn't it? she wants to be with this person (i want you back and forth, i want you up and down...) but she's come to the realization that she doesn't *need* him. maybe she can't reach out...maybe she's moving on...whatever the reason...his voice on tape is enough. btw...i refuse to believe that's regina spektor. it doesn't make sense? and i also thougt she was gay when i heard this song b/c duh...there's a recording of a *gril* talking and then jenny is sort of singing to her. but whatever. that doesn't really matter. |

sooo... Tegan has said that she used the number nineteen in a metaphorical sense...she was actually writing about feeling 19 again...and falling in love at the age of 26...which she apparently didn't think could happen. after listening to this song a million plus 5 times, i think that it's simply about meeting someone and finding yourself deeply connected to them...and it all happening very fast. then they have to part ways and neither knows where the relationship is going. btw, the drums in this song are AMZING!!! *thumbs-up* |

this song touches upon alot of things at once...like most of their early stuff, it is all over the place. I kinda refuse to believe that the end is really about a car crash. It simply sounds so *literal* and Sara (who wrote this) usually uses alot of metaphors. It doesn't seem like her at all. Besides, I doubt she even has a driver's licence. I think this songs is about starting over...burning your life down completely. And the anxiety that causes. I would know the feeling. You lay awake the whole night thinking of all that could potentially go wrong...of all you've lost. And Sara is trying to say that in the end, it doesn't matter anyways. This is all a con...everything we build around ourselves is gone once we die (especially for those of us who don't have a defined faith that is...tegan and sara included). So why waste your time thinking about non-important stuff? |

i adore this song. it's light sounding but so emotionally charged all the same. A great way to end an even greater record. She has been waiting for someone, finally decides that "ending it" is much better than doing nothing at all. She knows she won't regret her decision (says so in the beginning) but she does know she will undoubtly question it. If that other person had come around...or maybe if she herself had done the same, they would have truly been something special. But it can't happen. And she makes her decision. And breaks her own heart in the process. |

When I first heard this I was thinking what the hell?! It seemed so...poppy. And I know Tegan and Sara are pop...the good kind, but still, I was just a little bit freaked out. "Build a wall of books between us in our bed" sorta makes me picture an old married couple reading on their bed, a pile of books at their sides. Where's the romance/passion? So you're faced w/ all of this new emotions and obstacles. wow. What can i say about this song? I agree with jbabylove. I think it's about cheating as well. My sister recently went thru an affair. I don't know how many times I've cried while listening to this. It sounds to me like she cheated on her girlfriend while on tour...hence the "I'm home now. I'm coming around. I'm coming around," once she's done touring. She's obvioulsy feeling bad about it...and sorta wants to punish herself. "Pain of heart. Don't call me back." She has spent a alot of time thinking of her and thinking of "that." Yet at the same time, she wants to take the easy way out and cry...hoping her GF will feel pity and forgive her. That is the "edge of safe" she's staring at. "Encicle me, I need to be taken down." Just like Owls said, she has lost herself. She knows how many she has hurt. Maybe she can't stop. Somebody needs to bring her back down to earth. Those are my interpretations anyways. Whatever it means, I can most defintely feel the anguish and pain this is supposed to convey.
