The Killers – Tranquilize Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song can be interpreted in many ways, which just makes Lou Reed/Brandon Flowers even more genius. Also, I have to agree with one of the previous posters that this song really is the song that connects Hot Fuss and Sam's Town because it has some of the darkness that Hot Fuss does. And I definitely think that Lou must have had some say in the lyrics because he wouldn't just come in and sing his bit and leave and I think that's apparent in the lyrics because it really seems like a combination of the two.

The first time I listened to this song when the album came out, I instantly became obsessed. Lou Reed is one of my idols and The Killers and The Velvet Underground are two of my favorite bands. It's a match made in heaven. And to the person wondering where Lou is singing, his main bit starts with, "Always here, always on time. . ." but he does sing in other parts as well.

This is a bit off topic, but the video for this song is pretty cool too.

While I agree with pricillacox about the literary interpretation, I also agree with doctec about Edie. It is rumored that this is about Edie or directed to her. . .at this time she was sleeping with Lou and John (and who knows who else!) and Lou was obsessed with her. Plus, it truly does epitomize her existence like doctec said.

The Velvet Underground – Venus in Furs Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the last two posters, this song is definitely about Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch's novel, Venus in Furs. In the novel, Severin becomes Wanda's (his Venus in Furs) slave and submits his life to her because of the intense love and passion he feels for her and he also wants to be punished to show his love to her. He is also obsessed with women in furs and it is in their contract of his slavery that she is to wear her furs whenever he punishes him. In the end, she cures his heart and makes him realize how his aggressive and overwhelming devotion to her pushes her away.

If you read the book you will get other little references and you should read the book. It's really short and barely over a hundred pages and it made me understand this song so much more.

The Velvet Underground – Chelsea Girls Lyrics 18 years ago
I have heard of a few of the mentioned factory people. Including Ondine, Bridget, Ingrid (Superstar), Mary(Woronov), Susan (Bottomly) and Johnny Bore. Susan is most notably known as International Velvet. Of all the people listed, I know that everyone except for Johnny Bore were in the film Chelsea Girls, including Nico. They all must have been involved somehow in the making of Chelsea Girls or stayed at the Chelsea Hotel. The Chelsea Hotel is a major hotel that musicians, artists, and etc. stay in in Manhattan. A lot of these people stay for long periods of time, including Edie Sedgwick who started a fire in her room there because she tipped over a candle(i think, if i am remembering it correctly) during a drug induced state, she was also in Chelsea Girls, but made Warhol cut her out because of other issues involving Bob Dylan and a supposed contract she signed.

I haven't seen the movie, unfortunately, but wikipedia says that Ondine is in one of the more notable segments of the film entitled "Pope," which is where that reference derives from.

First_timer, where did you find an Elliott Smith cover of this song?

Flight of the Conchords – Think About It Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know which part is better, the "Am I a man? Yes, technically, yes. . ." or "Could somebody remove these cutleries from my knees?"

They are just geniuses.

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics 18 years ago
It's definitely bomb not bond. I agree with cs15hammer's interpretation. Everyone daydreams about possible relationships, jobs, that person you saw walking down the street that was good looking, and ect, but very few people actually have enough courage to say or do what they are thinking, especially if it is considered to be against the cultural norm. Once a disaster strikes (bomb or otherwise) people suddenly become open with their emotions and look for other people to support them, therefore bringing them together.

Oh and my favorite line is "Nature is a language-can't you read?" because of the way he says it and because I like how human nature is like an unspoken language and people either ignore or don't recognize how our actions are linked through human nature and that whole "learning from the past" deal.

The Smiths – Shakespeare's Sister Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with david beauy's explanation too. Laura, the mother in Menagerie, is extremely overbearing and controling with both her children . Her son, Tom, nicknamed Shakespeare because he writes during his shift at a warehouse obviously has a sister, Amanda. Throughout the play they both struggle to free themselves from their mother. Tom has to bring in the money for the family, so he is "throwing his skinny body down" to make money :)
