This song is so cool, but why would the 10 year old little brother be holding a bottle of gin? He's been driven to drinking by the abusive boyfriend at such a young age! |

Am I the only one who sees this as completely sexual? He quits the relationship because she has "ripped apart his soul" and so now how is she going to get off without him? He would love to "give a dog a bone" and "ring her bell" but he's given up his "midnight creep" and now her "daddy ain't there to do it" to her. Awesome song, and so is the whole album! |

| Ben Harper – Needed You Tonight Lyrics

One of my favorites on Lifeline, it doesn't really need explanation. The way the music kicks in fast, then slows down throughout the song is just brilliant to me. And Ben's voice is so powerful and so smooth when necessary. |

I've heard people think Ben did this song just to get some air time on the radio and it's just a pop song or whatever. I don't care about all that, I really like this song and the whole new album. To me this song is simply about being there for someone, whether bad times (their world is shaken, dreams broken) or good times (hoping with arms wide open). Through the ups and down, you keep reassuring that person that everything will be ok as long as we keep dancing and living life together. Someone else may come up with a deeper, more complicated meaning so please share if you do, thanks! |

I agree with lazysnail, the moon is so special because that's when he's with his girl, at night. In the morning when they part, that's when he says goodnight. A really beautiful song, thanks lazysnail for pointing that out! |

| Ben Harper – Both Sides of the Gun Lyrics

I think "Both Sides of the Gun" means we live our lives under pressure because we always have a gun pointed at us, and that makes us have to point a gun at someone else. Say you live in the ghetto, you can't help it if you're born into poverty. You feel "trapped and got no voice" so all you can do is "go and take you some" by pointing a gun at someone else. The rotten system of government we have is a major factor in all this tension we live with on a daily basis, like they're holding a gun at us. That's just what I think of to explain such a terrific song! |

Great song, I can't believe no one has commented on it yet! To me it's about the constant struggle within between good and evil. Ben is saying that he's been through it all and he's telling you that you might want to change your ways, because just getting by without making a difference for the good isn't enough. Otherwise, you're just on your way down and he doesn't want love someone like that. |

I saw Ben explain this song on a show called Live at Rehearsal Hall from Canada. He said he read an article about a lady who's son was killed in the war and she never got a true and worthwhile answer from the government. They just kept saying he died for freedom, hence the lyric "there's no freedom to be found lying face up in the ground." The mother put her son's ashes into tear drop-shaped lockets and gave them to family and loved ones. This obviously affected Ben so much that he wrote about it, and I truly admire everything he does. On a side note, this song is very reminiscent of "Masters of War" which I saw Ben and Tom Morello perform together! |

totally agree, a beautiful song that is simple and reminds us that true love is not meant to be perfect, you must make sacrifices at times but nothing will destroy the love |
