Seether – Fine Again Lyrics 14 years ago
I'll be honest, I get a slightly different feel from the song. Closer to what TwitchUSMC said but in a more general sense.

I think this song is about being fed up with everyone telling you that "Everyting's okay, everything's going to be fine." How do they know? When you're going through bad times people always want you to talk about it. They want you to "get it off your chest" but almost every single one of them says the same thing after you finish "everything's going to be fine." You hear it enough and eventually you just get tired of hearing it. Then you try to be positive and convince yourself that everything's going to be fine, that everything IS fine. Yet the entire time you feel like you're dying. Eventually you have to face how you feel inside, hence the lines at the end of the song "I am prepared now for myself".

Just my two cents though.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Pray Your Gods Lyrics 16 years ago
Here's my thoughts. Might be right, might be wrong. Who knows really?

The first verse is about Jesus trying to give us his message. He gave us all of the secrets about God and Heaven and how to get there. He also told us what we have to give up to do so. "Olive arms" possibly refers to the fact that at the time, around the area, most peoples skin would be olive toned like others around the mediteranian sea.

In both choruses he speaks about the gods that everyone at the time worshipped. The Roman and Greek pantheon is well known for the gods being cruel and demanding insane things from their worshippers. They were even jealous between eachother, constantly fighting and trying to sway people. He then says all he asks for is your love, nothing else. Knowing how the Romans will react to this, he knows he has little time before he is murdered for his message.

The 2nd chorus could be aimed at two different things. It could speak to the last days of Jesus' life. Able to feel the weight of the world on his shoulders and questioning why people deny him. However, I think it's something different. I think it's talking about him looking down at us today. Remember, Jesus said the church was his body. He feels his body weekend by the years. We all know the Church is weekening. Not just Catholic or Protestant, all of them, we shouldn't even split them like that, they are all His church. It also makes more sense when he says "people turn to gods of cruel design". This would mean they're turning away from Christ. If this was written from his last days of life, few had turned to him yet and those that did refused to truely deny him in their hearts (even if they did deny him outwardly). Today though, many are turning away from him and denying him. He then asks the rhetorical question of why. Is it that they fear death or life? If they feared death then they wouldn't turn away from him, they would turn to him. Jesus told us all to live life. Such a simple statement that carries so much meaning. Most don't live life, they survive life. There is a huge difference. He knows how we all feel and knows that we fear living life the way he told us we should. To soothe ourselves we turn away from him and deny him and "worship" other things like money, luxury, comfort, etc.

I hope you all don't think I'm preaching because I'm not really. This is just how I feel about the song and what it means. It might not be what Toad intended, but isn't the whole point of music what it means to -you-? Thanks for reading and sticking with me through this if you're this far down. I hope you have a good day.

P.O.D. – Sleeping Awake Lyrics 17 years ago
Interesting thoughts Chloe. I'm got narcolepsy myself and suffer from sleep paralysis, so I know exactly how that feels. It's weird because when I "wake up" in the morning, my brain is sometimes still in REM. I have odd visions because I'm actually seeing my dreams but they are VERY real feeling. That's actually why I looked up this song on here, was to see what people thought about it. While I actually don't think that is what it was written about, it really seems to fit.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
What I'm about to say is VERY controversial, please understand, I do not wish to light the flames of argument. These are mearly my thoughts. If you come with a closed mind, look elsewhere. If you can hear me with an open mind, read on...

I personally believe this song to refer to the decline of Christianity.

The first verse is obviously written from the perspective of someone (singular or a group in power) who once held GREAT power, and has lost it. The Christian religion (all denominations) once had this power, but it has now been lost.

The second verse gives us clues as to the reason behind the loss of power. Violence and abuse of power are at the root of it. The Crusades and The Inquisition are two large examples, but even on a smaller level, thousands of wars have been fought over religion. Many who serve in a war feel that they are doing the works of God (I will state here that I stand behind every soldier past and present, I used to be one). Millions of people have been killed "in the name of God." It is this very violence that scares many from Christianity. Also, in the past, many missionaries would use the threat of eternal damnation to scare people into converting. Threats of pain and suffering do not make anyone want to JOIN a religion, it makes them afraid of it. Read Machiavelli. Many Churches have now started teaching about the love of God, but a few years of work can not undo centuries of pent up fear. Now that much of the world seems to have become "accustomed" to the threats of Hell, most don't fear it. Many do not even believe in Satan anymore. Thus, with the threat gone, the power has gone. Therefore their castles have fallen because of a bad foundation.

These very things have caused Christian people to question their own beliefs and doubt themselves. Doubt in God would cause one to not be admitted to Heaven, thus explaining the lines about St. Peter.

These are my thoughts. I ask those open minded people of the world that may read this to think about it. It hurts me to write this, but as they say, the truth hurts. We must fix this. Teach people of the love of God, but DO NOT try to force it down their throats. Quit using the threats of eternal torture to scare people into doing what you want them to do. The person you are talking to may not be ready to hear what you have to say. "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear" not the other way around. Start being less selfish and more selfless. Show people the power of God through your GOOD acts, not your threats.

As a side note... I am not some super religious zelot. I rarely go to Church anymore, for many of the reasons I listed above. My beliefs are firm though. Your relationship with God is between you and God, NO ONE ELSE.

If you take the time to meditate on this, do something to change it. If you feel angry by my words, I appologize. Try to realize, this is how MANY people view Christians these days. It is up to US to fix it.

Deftones – Change (In the House of Flies) Lyrics 18 years ago
The beautiful thing about this song, is that it is completely open to interpretation by the listener. Change means something different to everyone. As for me, here's what it means.

"I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire"

He sees that someone he cares about (not necessarily a lover, it could be a friend or family member that he feels close to) has changed into a completely different person than they used to be, something that "The Watcher" finds to be ugly. Just watching this happening is painful for him to watch.

"I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
And you feel so alive
I've watched you change"

The Watcher sees this person acting with a new passion for life. The are excited by their new form and feel as if they had never lived before as their old self.

"I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed "

The Watcher becomes angry. The reason for this could be many: jealousy, loneliness, sheer dislike of the new form, but I mostly feel it's jealosy. Think about it. He's been watching this person he cared about change into the antithisis of what they were, and he still is. The feel a great burst of life by how their life has changed. Meanwhile, The Watcher is sitting around watching this happen. His life has become worse, because now he has lost his friend/lover to what he dislikes the most. He's jealous of their new joy and freedom. He's jealous of their new friends for stealing The Watcher's friend. So what does he do? He pulls them aside and tries to rip their new form/joy away from them, take their new found wings away. The Watcher is hoping that by doing this the person will come back, but it's too late.

"I look at the cross
And I look away"

Afterwards, The Watcher sees that what he did was wrong, and feels even worse than before. He grew jealous of his now ex-friend/lover and attacked them for it. Now he knows he will never get them back. From here, it diverges two ways, and I can't decide which I think actually fits, so I shall put them both...

"Give you the gun
Blow me away"

1) The Watcher decides to walk away from the situation. He gives the ex-friend the ability to forget about him (thus making him "dead" to the changed person). I like this one better. It has The Watcher leaving on a good note. He did some things wrong, but we all do. In the end, he realized when to move on and did so.

2) He is actually asking God to kill him. Look at the cross, I look away, give you the gun, blow me away. He hands the "gun" to Christ on the cross and begs him to "blow me away". I dislike this one simply because it says that he has not learned anything. Life is about learning and one of the hardest lessons out there is learning when to let go of someone you care for. However, I also know that not all people learn this one without resorting to drastic measures, so it leave it as another possible option.

Well, there you are, my 2 cents. I hope you enjoy and finding what this song means to you.
