I love everyone who was like "THIS SONG ISN'T ABOUT LESBIANS, IT'S ABOUT TRUE LOVE."
Because, you know, lesbians are incapable of actually being in love. |

uugghh this song just clashes so horribly with the rest of the album. I love Neil Young with the vast majority of my heart, but this song was an epic mistake. |

Now I realize that these guys are basically a Christian band and would probably never write about anything along these lines, but the first few lines just sort of strike me as a religious girl coming to terms with the fact that she's a lesbian. Please don't yell at me. |

This is probably my favorite song of all time. I die every time I see them perform it live. It's like the first time every time. Any song about murder that can be made into something cheerful and hummable (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, anyone?) is okay with me. |

I like to believe that this song is about two archaeologists in love. That's just the interpretation that makes me happiest. |

This is the greatest song ever. This just sort of reminds me of two brothers playing with toy soldiers and the older brother trying to freak the younger brother out. My brother would say stuff like that all the time to me. "THEY WANT YOU." I was scared of Transformers for a couple of years. |

| Neil Young – The Needle And The Damage Done Lyrics

I think that there is a deeper meaning than just drug use in this song. The needle isn't just referring to drugs, it's talking about a record needle. It seems like a stretch at first, but if you look at the lyrics it could easily be about how Neil has seen the consequences of fame in his friends and himself. Maybe the line "I sing the song because I love the man
I know that some of you don't understand" is Neil saying that he plays music for himself and for his fans, but some other musicians only play for the money and fame so they can't understand that. I think it's more about being addicted to fame than drugs. Drugs are part of the equation, so that's the metaphor that is used. |

When I first heard this song, I thought that it was about a boy and girl, just like most people here thought. Then one day I was listening to it with my dad while we were driving through a forest after watching a meteor shower and I had my window down, and I realized what the song was really about. I think it can actually go both ways. I think it's just about pure and simple love. Between family, friends, significant others. When I'm driving at night with someone I care about and we're just listening to music and the other person asks a silly question, I'll just smile. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever written. |
