| i agree with a lot of the comments made here. I also feel like its about a very strained mother son relationship where the son just wants the mom to be understanding about all the things he has done in life and for her to be okay with him finding his own way. For me the "pups" verse has a very specific meaning. To me the scene he's depicting actually happened at some point and the mother, seeing the dog and pups in such a state, realizes just how problematic their relationship has been and she breaks down, distraught about what has gone wrong. It would take a feeling as strong as that for someone to cry until the next morning. | |

This song is about shedding religion. "Made sense of such a raw deal" the raw deal is the reality of humanity being insignificant in the universe and there being no afterlife, playing to make sense of that is pretending there is more to life than that as taught by religion. "I lost my faith in a sweet illusion where every *wound* heals" I's assume he's talking about catholic confession forgiving all sins. Which isnt the case if the whole dogma is false. "drunk on new truth" Excited about being able to live life for yourself and not have to worry about appeasing god/eternal punishment in hell. Just the freedom of being in control of your own life. Etc. The imagery is there. |

| "the night was a chalkboard with a fingernail moon" the line is kind of hard to make out on the album but after hearing it live thats what it says. This song was written by a friend of his and inspired by a dream i believe. | |
