I've done extensive research and this is what it's about. (PART 1 of 2)

Some Background: By 1908 the Ottoman Empire was called 'the sick man of Europe'. The “Empire” was in reality mish-mash of diverse ethnic and religious groups (Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs, Albanians, Jews, Armenians, Arabs), all of them oppressed and exploited by the dominant Turks. Among them the Armenians were one of the most prosperous groups due to their diligence and intellect. Although the majority still lived in the rugged Eastern part of the Empire in poverty and ignorance, a small but prominent minority of Armenians had formed an important intellectual and commercial middle class in the largest cities of the Empire. This prosperity caused a serious backlash by the Turks oppressors in the late 1800s that resulted in several mini-genocides (still thousands were murdered).

In 1908 a group of Turkish officers called the “Young Turks” took power in the Empire trough a ‘coup de etat’. Their main aim was to modernize the Turkish state along European lines. For that they enlisted the support of all the minorities, promising equality and an end of oppression. The Armenian elite, among others, was easily fooled by these promises and actively supported the Young Turks.

The Young Turks government was formed by a triumvirate (Enver Pasha, Djemal Pasha, and Talat Pasha). At the beginning the Young Turks showed some equality to minorities but, after the entry of the Empire to the World War, they totally reversed course and instituted a racist anti-minority policy (Turkey only for the Turks). The main victims of this ethnic cleansing were the Armenians and the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians was the result.

After the Turkish defeat in the war the Allied countries occupied most of Turkey and vowed to carve large parts of Turkey to compensate Armenians and other victims of the Turkish misdeeds. The three Pashas fell in disgrace and were expelled from government as the main culprits of the disaster and a new ‘Young Turk’, Mustafa Kemal alias “Ataturk” took power. Ataturk, through shrewd diplomacy and ruthless military efficiency was able to recover most of the invaded “Motherland” and in turn invaded a nascent Armenian state. In both stances he gave a free hand to its troops to massacre most of the surviving Armenians they encountered. Thanks to its victories he was able to obtain from the Soviet Union a revision of its borders with Turkey and the river Aras was set as the new border. Most of the lands ceded were inhabited by Armenians (massacres ensued).

Ataturk went on to become the “father” of the Turkish republic, establishing a 100% Turkish country with no ethnic minorities. One of his first measures to create a “modern” state was to establish the denial of the Armenian genocide as a state policy (80 years later this hasn’t changed)
