That's what I meant. In the book, Michael is the archangel who exiled Adam and Eve from Eden (also as seen on the cover). So it is possible that he is speaking in the chorus and lamenting the fall of man. Originally, I thought that Adam had been speaking in this stanza: "Love is a tragedy All that I have, all that I'll ever need Is right here inside Let the wings of freedom, be my guide" However, it is clear that Satan is speaking. As for the chorus, it is made apparent that Satan is in Eden and not in heaven, however what are they referring to when they speak of paradise? Is it Eden or is it heaven? That's where I'm stuck. |

I actually believe that two people are speaking in this song. I'll label each stanza. (Satan is questioning his presence and his intentions in Eden) [Satan] In the cold misty morning Gleaming rays awake the dawn Here I stand, a stranger in this land Does your conscience betray you? Falling from grace, feel the sun on my face Does desire still hold true? (Satan watches Eve and knows that what he is going to do will destroy Adam and Eve's perfection) [Satan] Mystified by her beauty Does the hunter pity his prey? Under starless skies our love must die and fade away (Satan speaks to Eve, but does not yet temptate her) [Satan] Take my hand, defy the damned, make a stand, seize the day Yours or mine, damned or divine, draw the line, come with me (Michael cries for what Satan has done) [Michael] Looking down form ethereal skies Silent, crystalline tears I cry For all must say their last goodbye to paradise (Satan once again commenting on Eve's beauty) [Satan] My yearning is silenced by angelic skin of white Love conquers all for heavens fall, this fateful night [Satan] Yours or mine, damned or divine, draw the line, serpentine (Satan feels that he is free from God's wrath and so shall be Adam and Eve by his "guidance") [Satan] Love is a tragedy All that I have, all that I'll ever need Is right here inside Let the wings of freedom, be my guide [Michael] Looking down form ethereal skies Silent, crystalline tears I cry For all must say their last goodbye to paradise Say goodbye... goodbye (Satan lamenting his embarrassment) [Satan] So I've cheated And I've lied Been the victim of foolish pride And I've begged And I've crawled And I've battled, and bled for it all So I'll savour the downfall... of paradise [Michael] Looking down form ethereal skies Silent, crystalline tears I cry For all will say their last goodbye to paradise That's what I think anyway... |
