Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the meaning of this song is elaborated on in the official music video.

Everything is dream, artificial...the plastic trees and the fact that the speaker seems to be drifting away from reality.

Its also about the loss of trust and everything that is real in the world. I think thats what the manitee represents. As seen in the video, there is a manitee resting on a sort of pillar but at the end of the video, you realize that its dead, entangled in a net, with a plastic umbrella and a sombrero. Its the death of the natural world by consumerism, tourism, and damage to the eco-system, main themes on the album. Murdoc, recognizing the meaning behind this, orders cyborg Noodle to shoot at the figure clawing at the dead manitee (seemingly corporations leeching off the death of all things natural) but the figure gets away. Then they happen upon Plastic Beach.

I think whats melancholy about this song is that the narrator is watching all of this happen, slipping from the real world to a dream world where everything is plastic, even perhaps the lover he's longing for in the song (personally think its Murdoc looking for Noodle- he has the fake, cyborg Noodle but yearns for the real Noodle. Everything seems like a dream to him, because its not real, literally, especially since landing at Plastic Beach)

I totally agree with Unresolved- it's the perfect song for your first time.

I love this song, absolutely and wholly. They're in love with each other and he obviously wants her and lusts for her (Let me give you what you're giving me). He feels a need to show her how much he loves her in return for how much she loves him. She ignites a fire within him, whether it be the fire of wanting to have sex or live again. At the end, they're obviously about to make love.

There are no words to express how much I adore this song.

VAST – Pretty When You Cry Lyrics 18 years ago
This has to be one of my favorite Vast songs. Obviously, its about an abusive relationship, both emotionally and physically- both of them get off on hurting each other. But while everyone is saying that he's the one who's manipulating the girl, I take it to be the other way around. She's made by everything that he shouldn't want, but he's enticed anyway. It seems a though she may be playing with his feelings a bit ( "And I can't tell where your lust ends, and all your love begins")

He's obviously in love with her ("If you knew how much I loved you, you would run away") but obviously she needs him to be abusive to her ("but when I treat you bad, it always makes you want to stay"). There's also an obsession with her on his part and his need for taking her when he doesn't want to- he doesn't want to need her, but he does anyway.

To sum it up, its a beautiful song about loving and hating, obsession, violence, and light sadomasochism. Everytime I listen to it, it sends shivers down my spine.

Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit Lyrics 18 years ago
I absolutely love this song. The first time I heard it, I was five and it gave me chills then...it still does.

I take this song to be about drugs- getting on a high or an acid trip and "going down the rabbit hole". Alice and Wonderland is a pseudonym for a drug trip, cemented by the line, "Feed your head" (do drugs) and "...you've just had some kind of mushroom" (shrooms).

"And the ones that mother gives you, Don't do anything at all." - definitely take that to be placebos of some sort or some sort of sedative.

I don't believe that Lewis Carroll did recreational drugs. He took painkillers to help alleviate severe pain. Back then, people took raw opium to deal as painkillers. This coupled with a rampant imagination probably spurred the imagery for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass".

Even so, I love the lyrics to this song and Grace Slick's voice singing them makes me shiver.

Iron & Wine – The Sea and the Rhythm Lyrics 18 years ago
One of my favorite Iron and Wine songs. To me, this song represents the relationship between a man and a woman, not specifically a sexual one, but most definitely a sensual one. They're lovers and are exploring each other, not just through sex but through caresses.

The line, "the milk from your breast is on my lips" does seem to resemble the relationship between a mother and child. To me however, it's merely a reference to Femininity, the woman's "traditional" role of being the nurturer and here, she's nurturing him, both through love and physical gratification.

Sex definitely comes to mind during the last stanza, Bean sings, "...tonight we're the Sea," and I interpret that as them moving as one (sex being the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear this). They aren't a man and a woman but just one (like the sea), a feeling that love often incurs between two people.

Overall, its an incredibly beautiful song about a man and a woman in love and consequently, passion.
