Desaparecidos – The Happiest Place on Earth Lyrics 18 years ago
And the lines:

"But opportunity, no, it don’t exist
It’s the opiate of the populace
We need some harder shit now"

I couldn't have said it better if I'd written ten thousand pages. The opportunity is the American Dream. It's the hope that if we work hard and do what we're supposed to and go to school and get a degree and don't do drugs that we will make money and go to a good church and live a damn good life. the only problem is, that a FUCKING LIE> anyone whose lived a little and been through shit will tell you this. This lie is a drug and when we figure out that it's a lie we need something a LOT harder to make us still believe or at least have the will to pretend to believe. ANd nothing that we are told on ABC NBC CBS is the truth. It's just an illusion. It's just what they want us to believe its the fucking "backdrops for Disney
Well, look up close
It is superimposed on a blank blue screen
It is fantasy, fucking magical
The dream floats like a chemical through each snapped synapse
Our television past that is beautiful no more, no more" NO MORE. WE'll just keep on justifying droping bombs and blowing up civilizations. For those who've heard "Four Winds," when Great Satan's gone (America) the whore of Babylon's gonna cave (the rest of the world).

SO might as well enlist. Might as fucking well.

This song is an amazing commentary on our commerlized lives. the American DREAM is a joke. It doesn't exist. Our freedom was the END of soooooo many lives in soooooo many other places in the world.

but the way Oberst puts it all is amazing. It's like yeah I want to be proud of my country, but the truth is we are exploting the world. it's all about money and power and it's passed on the techincality of "freedom" and that we are furthering the American Dream. What dream?

We need some goddamn hope. We need a yellow bird. We need something. Or else yeah lets just press a button and blow something up. WHat's it to us? we're furthering the future of the best country in the world.

Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics 18 years ago

And god she was a classic addict before there was anything to be addicted to. Then when you mix pills and then booze into the equation—her worst enemy is herself she can defeat all of the odds [alcoholism, substance abuse, addiction, being an outright liar and monster]. But ultimately what will destroy Neely is herself. She doesn’t care who she has to kill but she’s going to be on top. But before all of her fame Neely was this bright ambitious girl—who turned into the worst.

And so what this song means that this girl who once used to be so innocent and ambitious, turned into a monster because of alcohol and sleeping pills and everything else. And Conner used to be friends with this girl when she was focused and bright and funny and smart [before she couldn’t remember who she used to be]. And ultimately I think this song is about Conner singing to himself in mirror. That he is not who he used to be. He drinks too much and has gone so far from who he once was [even if the depression and self-destruction was there all along]. And he knows that no one paints his mirror. He knows that he’s gone off the deep end. That nothing is what it used to be
