| The White Stripes – In the Cold, Cold Night Lyrics

Meg isn't the best singer I've ever heard, but she isn't at all bad. I think it's about adultery. This is a complete stretch, but do you think it may be about Jack and Meg? I would be interested in knowing which of them wrote it; it would work either way. We notice a similar concept of cheating in "Fell In Love With a Girl". "Come and kiss me by the riverside. Yeah, Bobby says it's fine; he don't consider it cheating." I really wish they were on the same album so that I could create more of a correllation. Maybe it's just my wishful thinking that Jack and Meg will get back together, but I like to think that this song is about them wanting to be together again. It's obvious they still love each other, even if they're no longer romantically attatched.
A completely unrelated idea that came to me as I reread the lyrics is that Meg, or whoever the character in the song is, is in love with an older man. "I don't care what other people say" makes it obvious that their relationship would be frowned upon by most people. Perhaps we could use the classicly taboo example of a teacher. The line "You make me feel a little older, like a full grown woman might." makes me think that the guy is either older, more mature, or so much less mature he makes her feel old. Like his mom.
I think it's also about rejection and desperation. Here she is, throwing herself at this guy who obviously won't give in even though we're led to believe he feels the same. Well, that's jsut the ideas I get. I think it's a good song, no matter what it's about, and it's nice to hear Meg's voice. |

I jsut read it all the way through. Someone left out the part where he dies. It doesn't really make sense now. |

This song always gets stuck in my head. The lyrics don't sound like The Stripes, but as always, they own tehir covers and make it theirs. As usual, I think it's better when the White Stripes do it. Much better. |

| Modest Mouse – Truckers Atlas Lyrics

This may be totally wrong, but ths is what I think of when I listen to this song. So there's this guy, assumably Isaac Brock, who either finds a truckers' atlas, is given one, or purchases one from a garage sale or pawn shop or whatever. So he starts road tripping. "This truckers' atlas knows the ways, the freeways and highways don't know" To me, that means that he knows all these cool ways to get there because of his atlas. Then he goes all these places trying to get away from his life because he isn't ahppy or it's too boring or whatever. So then, he gives/sells his atlas to someone else. I think everything after the "I sold my atlas by the freight stairs" is explaining to the atlas's new owner how to get places and all the things that he can do. I don't know... maybe people think it's a little more deep than that, but that's what I get from it. |

I always come here when I'm bored or curious about what a song means, but I just signed up. It's pretty funny to listen to people argue, but this is my first time to actually comment, so if you could please not be mean to me... (I'll spare you the anecdote about YouTubers criticizing my first claymation. You're welcome.)
This is an awesome band. I'm a HUGE fan of the White Stripes, and Wolfmother is very Stripesy. Which means they're also Zeppeliny, and I'm a big fan of Led Zepp too. This song, to me, stands out easily as the best on the album. Anyway... about the whole "dear sir"/"Nyssa" thing... I don't think it matters. I thought he said "he said" and I still got the same message a bunch of you did. If I may reference "Blue Orchid" by The White Stripes... It's kind of the same thing. You know the whole "pluck your flower, lose your virginity" thing. I think it's about a guy talking to an old love's father. Like, "Hey! Don't you remember me?! I screwed your daughter!!" Maybe they even had a child... With the whole "family tree" stuff. Still, with all Wolfmother songs... I get some kind of fantasy-ish undertones. I just can't accept any of their songs as being anything so mundane. |
