| Kenny Rogers – Tulsa Turnaround Lyrics

I come hear not only for the explanations, but also because the lyrics are generally more accurate. However, this song has some howlers:
"Five miles of road between me and my house" should be "between me and the hounds."
"Well I wish I was back at Bacon" should be "I wish I was back in Macon."
"Down in a hollo'" should be "Down in the hollow."
I'm pretty sure the last line of the chorus is just "ya'll" and not "why'a-all" but that one is less clear. |

@[bugo:47621] Wrong. Some journalist managed to get Haggard to call them "satire" at one point but that was not what he had in mind, as is immediately obvious from anything else he has said about them. This song is 100% not poking fun at patriotic people. |

@[sun_giant:47620] I doubt the veracity of that quotation. I've read other things Merle Haggard said about this song and this does not correspond to it. Some journalist managed to cajole a response from Haggard that said it was a "parody," which used to be on the wikipedia page now, but I don't see it any longer. It was never accurate. Check out the wikipedia page now (2023) to get a more realistic view of what he actually thought when he was writing the song. It was not a joke. |

I'm pretty sure "Tighten up" is something like "tie the knot..." and "So don't let me run too far from home" is "So don't ever run too far from home."
I'm kind of surprised this hasn't gotten some comments yet, it's a good song. I never gave any thought to the incomprehensible background lyrics after the first two verses -- very interesting to see them. |

@[MCLowe:45425] I came for the same reason. I always thought that Pete was just desperate for a rhyme so he didn't care if it meant anything, but I'd prefer it did, because I like the song otherwise. |

| Hall and Oates – I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) Lyrics

It sounds like he's singing "I can go for being twice as nice, I can go for just repeating the same old lines." That also seems to make more sense, to contrast all the things that he will do, "but [he] can't go for that." I think it's great that he doesn't mention anything in particular; it allows each listener to fill in the appropriate verb for himself. |

@[Marmot14:5717] Yes, I'm sure you have it right, the lyrics are from the Oldfield version. Which is very interesting because it is sung by a woman; gives it a different perspective. |

I also thought it was "bond," and I agree that it makes more sense that way. But I thought the "it" was sex...I was assuming the question related to sex, and that, if it wasn't out of love, then the sex itself would bring them together. |

| Toby Keith – Beer for My Horses Lyrics

Does anyone think this song might not be entirely serious? I mean, most of it is an inspiring, law-and-order song, but then he ends each chorus with "...and beer for my horses," which sounds pretty silly. I think he's saying, "We're going to play up cowboy justice because it's fun and it's a nice idea, but we realize that we can't just get a posse together and kill the bad guys." If it's not intended to be at least a little ironic, I would like to know the significance of the line "beer for my horses." |

| The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics

I have read a number of comments about the Smiths' great lyrics. In most cases, I find their lyrics to be incredibly awkward and obscure (thanks to this site for clearing up a lot of references). I still love them, partly because I like awkward and obscure lyrics, and partly because Morrissey's incredible intonation makes them sound lyrical anyway.
But this song contains one of my favourite lyrics, which really is both sonorous and meaningful:
"Give in to lust,
Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll
Soon be dust ... " |
