Well the song is obviously about masks, but it's more of a metaphorical mask that the narrator wears. It's also a song about isolation from others and acting the way you want people to see you; for instance, "In the evening I take it off, but there's another one underneath And I can't seem to find the bottom of the stack" at least to me seems to be like he comes home from work where he acts a certain way to get by, or to impress the boss or whoever, then comes home and puts on a different mask and acts according to what he considers to be what he should being acting like at home. Even acting with certain people, you act differently around them, and thus showing a different mask every time. By the end it starts getting to him but there's nothing he can do to make the feeling go away. At least that's how I feel about it. |
