Yeah, I think we all realize that the basic premise of this song is marriage, the conflicting roles and social expectations of the female, coming of age, facing your commitment fears, etc.... What I'd like to note is just how POWERFUL tori's images and melodies are... everything about this song is emotionally perfect. I'm not a basketcase, I promise, but when I was sixteen and hearing this for the first time, reading the lyrics for the first time --- I literally cried for at least an hour. Whether egotistical, self-indulgent and whiny... or not... this song is truly powerful. |

yeaaaah communism! Stick it to the man, uh, that would be Neil Young: don't feel like satan, but I am to them. Kidding. Slightly. But if anyone uses sarcasm in its most corrosive and meaningful form, it would be Neil Young. Right here. And I'm sure he didn't mean to do this, but the fact that he says "Keep on *rockin*" seems to point a finger at that the musicians and rockstars, heady with glamour and popularity. When was the last time that Cobain, well, wait, he's not a good example... ANY rockstar paused their career to help out the impoverished? And it WASN'T a publicity stunt? Haha, okay, Bono, but he doesn't count ;) |

Wow... I am loving these interpretations! esp sixasterix and philemon's ideas. even the "reverse psychology" idea has its merits. I've always wanted to think something similar to sixasterix's interp, but I never could quite articulate it, or piece it together. And that's what I love about these lyrics: they are so abstract that it takes quite a bit of thinking to really piece an entire idea together. And with that much free reign over interpretation, more thinking is encouraged. Sure, these guys could have just been high... but we could have chosen to overlook these lyrics as meaningless. And the fact that we didn't goes to prove the power and benificence of the individual's search for meaning. As ridiculous as it sounds (and it really does), these ideas give me a bit of hope for humanity. |

| Say Anything – By Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| are you kidding? every word oozes condescension. who calls another "sugar" sincerely that's not some waitress at wafflehouse in southern america? esp when he says that the skin "spits"; that's not the most delicate way he could describe sweating. If anything, it's depraved and slimy. I love how current popular songs deprave and demean women. This theme runs rampant these days. | |
