It's a beautiful life. Now write some songs about your wife. You opened Pandora's box--what did you expect?

Jimmy Eat World – Ten Lyrics 15 years ago
"Poison" obviously means same-sex relations, something I have never partook in, not that there's anything at all wrong with it. I would freely admit to it if I were bisexual or a lesbian, if nothing else just to piss my parents off. I relate to Russell Brand whom everyone thinks is gay because of his mannerisms and demeanor, but is really a raging heterosexual. Like I'm supposed to give a flying fuck what people think of my sexuality. I'm not the type to rush into marriage to prove anything.

Cherry Ghost – Dead Man's Suit Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so dense with imagery that conjures up this beautiful existential longing. But I think it's "imagine you can handle the LIES" instead of loss.

I love the imagery of their lyrics. This band is definitely an untapped gem that needs to be exposed for their amazing talent. Love the Elliott Smith & Stars influences in their sound.

Jimmy Eat World – Here It Goes Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is great fun. I feel like the female equivalent to JEW's "Here It Goes" is "Pull Shapes" by the Pipettes. It's just a song I'm infatuated with at the moment but if you like HIG, you might enjoy it.

Annie Lennox – Dark Road Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the "house" Annie is singing about is her soul and how it's a "dark road" frought with her demons and defenses that leads to it. All of Annie's songs are very spiritual but this one is much more overtly so. I think it encompasses her philosophy on how she is a spiritual person but not necessarily religious as you won't find her with "the word," meaning the Bible or literal religious doctrine in my opinion. Another beautiful song by Ms. Lennox on how it feels to be weatherbeaten and weary on the path of life.

Does anyone else think the "wish" being sung about is referring to the wish made in "Lucky Denver Mint?" That's what struck me when I first heard that line of the song.

Jimmy Eat World – Dizzy Lyrics 16 years ago
While this song is overwhelmingly beautiful, Jim needs to consider the consequences of his lyrics because he's basically saying that the theoretical girl he's singing to has unprotected sex all the time. That could be a hard rumor to scotch! Maybe he does mean a lot to this girl he's singing to but what good would it do to go into it? His music is probably sacred to whoever he's singing to.

Jimmy Eat World – Let It Happen Lyrics 16 years ago
This song as well as some of the others of "Chase This Light" have a harder, faster, more macho sound and tone to them. I, for one, would like to see JEW return to their mellower shoegazer roots and more metaphorical lyrics. Still a beautiful song that demonstrates Jim's ability to stay true to himself despite pervading superficiality.

Jimmy Eat World – Feeling Lucky Lyrics 16 years ago
It should be:

"It's a trap any direction I move,
Every time I sing along, the needle skips,
I huff and I puff but the house is bricks."

Can I just make a suggestion that people not post lyrics unless they have the liner notes? It would save a lot of time and editing anyway. The only reason I posted the ones for "Mathematics" is they didn't include the lyrics with the CD which is stupid IMO. Also, can I suggest you be allowed to edit your posts because the anger I expressed on here a few posts back was misdirected. Just my two cents.

I don't understand how Jim could think he's wasting his life on nothing good when his music brings so much joy to people.

What the fuck did I show you? How about making me fall in love with your voice only to eat my heart out for the rest of my life. Well, I'm a glutton for punishment, Jim, so bring it on. Oh right, but I'm crazy and deluded and on psych meds so you can use all of that to disregard what I say anyway. Do you know what it's like to slowly realize your entire existence has been a sham over the past five years? Write a song about that, you cynical bastard.

I don't see why being from NJ needs to be bad. I've been to the Jersey shore and it was beautiful. Plus I think "Garden State" completely revamped its image. Like Shakespeare said, "Nothing is either good nor bad--only thinking makes it so." It took me a while to figure out Jim's voice in his songs because he blends a lot of different ideas and metaphors into his lyrics which makes them really unique. I've never watched the Sopranos so that reference is lost on me.

"Shot that stops my clock" very possibly could mean birth control. I've given up on mine because my insurance company thinks my dad lied by not telling them that I have Borderline Personality Disorder (which I don't but I'm slowly realizing my mom does) when he signed me up for a private plan. So they've started sending me placebos instead which is fine because the Risperdal I'm on is killing my sex drive anyway. Don't you just love modern medicine and the information age. I sure do!

In response to what Jayemel said about it being about them having sex, that better be in the fucking past because Jim's married now so whoever he's singing to would be labeled as a homewrecker by default.

Jimmy Eat World – Carry You Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like Jim is singing to a particular person which to me seems a little overwrought and self-indulgent now that he's married. Kind of reminds me of the lyrics from "Nothing Wrong"--we wanna know we own the cake we're eating, spit it out. Seems like Jim wants to have his cake and eat it, too. But then again he's a rockstar so we'll allow him that, won't we? :P

I heard this song at a time when I was very depressed and disillusioned with my life. I only wish I would have listened to the message more closely. Winterpills – Broken Arm Lyrics 17 years ago
This song = moving philosophical ear candy :)

I don't know who these guys are, but I intend to find out! They have a totally unique sound although I can detect some Elliott Smith/Morrissey/Shins influences in the music. Not only a super catchy melody, but beautiful, thought-provoking lyrics to boot. Especially love the lines "the decider says I'm a fighter, but I can't feel my fucking legs."

As far as the meaning, the whole first stanza seems to me to be expressing feelings of self-loathing, cynicism, futility, and nihilism. The message is very existentialist in my opinion. The idea that a farmer would hate his own livelihood seems bizarre and absurd, but also sadly makes sense in the world we are living in today.

Actually, the whole first stanza reminds me very much of Albert Camus' "The Stranger," just from the degree of apathy that is so evident throughout. Feelings of alienation, isolation, and loneliness are imbued in us by our culture. We are taught to not like ourselves from the media, advertising, religion (Western not Eastern), movies, and everything else that we are bombarded with. It's considered a crime to feel good about yourself, and if you dare to show that you do, be prepared to be torn down by those who are jealous and insecure. Amazing how we can pull our socks up and cope with devastating terrorist attacks, hopeless wars, and environmental disasters, but we can't seem to cope with our own feelings of fear and unworthiness. Isn't there something wrong with that picture?

Cherry Ghost – People Help The People Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song is too long. The meaning is pretty straightforward in my opinion: show kindness to your fellow man. I like the simplicity of the lyrics. My favorite lines are:

"Oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned all those good hearts away."

Really sums up the whole idea of the song: That people just worry about getting ahead & they don't see the value or point in being a good person. I don't care how successful you are, although I know that is the focus in our cutthroat society. You may be a successful CEO/estate agent/salesman, but at the end of the day, if you're not a good human being, you aren't a successful PERSON in the true sense of the word.

(Oh, and not to be a grammar nazi, but there shouldn't be a comma after 'turned.' FYI.)

Also, it should be changed to "dim MY temptation to live for you" instead of "the" temptation in the 3rd line.

Yeah, Kameron & Lacey were amazing when they danced to this last week on SYTYCD. If you haven's seen it yet, YouTube it stat.

Yay for the first 2007 comment! :) There are a lot of interesting interpretations on here. I had always taken the "poison" literally as alcohol, but FakeYellow's comment that the band said it stood for "making out" (& more I'm assuming) makes me reevaluate the song.

Either way the theme is of escaping your true feelings. The "poison" (i.e. alcohol or meaningless sex) enables the escape which is necessitated by the fear of dealing with your true emotions.

"Feelings change so fast,
Safety scares them away."

It's freakin' terrifying to be honest with yourself about your emotions--much easier to bury them & distract yourself with booze or sex. Taking "poison" to mean sex actually really works for me, especially when you think about the last line "Look in my eyes and blame no one." They're both trying to numb themselves from all the hurt with casual sex, looking into each others' eyes & blaming no one but themselves. An act of sharing each other's self-loathing.

To me, the "chase" they are trapped in is running away from their true feelings & carrying on with life without really showing them to the world or other people. Sex & alcohol can be ways to escape one's true feelings. But in this song's case, I think they are being used as an escape from "the act" or the face you put on for the world in daily life. So sex or alcohol becomes the "way out through the lies."

The lyric "it's my own advice I need" shows that the parties involved know they are the ones responsible for their own suffering. They know they should be trying to change how they deal with reality instead of escaping from it. But they are both scared & "weak" so instead, recognizing this in each other, they comfort each other as they indulge in the "poison" that numbs all feeling. That's my take on this absolutely breathtaking song.

"Emo" is a vulgar term that should only be applied to second rate bands who try but fail miserably to mimic what these lyrical virtuosos do with such ease. JEW are so good at capturing the pain of the entire spectrum of emotional experiences that they are in a class of their own.

FYI everybody, the girl mentioned in "Japanese Gum" has Borderline Personality Disorder, and the boy mentioned is someone that desperately wants to help her. (straight from Wikipedia)

Now look up "Borderline Personality Disorder" if you want a better understanding of the hellish condition that drove Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin, & Jim Morrison to take their own lives.
