I see this song on two levels - on the one hand commenting about the conflict in Ireland, on another about the nervousness in a trip to see a new partners family for the first time.
I like the reference to St Patrick because it places the song in the Irish conflict without picking sides. It might be a cross community relationship. The lines about the girl "despising such poisonous family ties" and later "Fixes her face like a good little daughter, And follows her family" describe the girl being indoctrinated into her culture, but could be the boy trying to get straight in his own head how the girl can belong to a community he hates. The lines about never reachin his home might mean his own family will reject him because of this relationship.
