Morrissey – In The Future When All's Well Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the albums highlights, “In The Future When All’s Well” is an impressive and powerful track. Provoking plenty of emotion in the usual manner. So lets interpret. Or at least try…

We start off in the first stanza/verse. Our song begins where we get the portrait of what appears to be our protagonist contemplating the future. That as time will inevitably pass things will be better. He/She will be healthy and wealthy . But in a way being sarcastic about his/her good health saying that either way in the future when all will be well they will lie down and be counted. Assuming (in the old Moz cliché) death. So even if he/she is rich and still able to live long in life they will by choice (I’m guessing) lie down and be counted (die.)

CHORUS - Our protagonist is thanking someone , I don’t believe it to be “Lee” for “Lee” is to defend our protagonist and to “confront what he/she is afraid of”. Maybe god? Now our protagonist introduces a new character, one coined the name “Lee”. Very witty of Moz to choose a name that can be fitting of both a female and male. Leaving us the reader to make our own guesses. Moving on… We can assume that this is the protagonists’ best friend, friend, relative or significant other. And our protagonist trust or confides or we’ll even say depends on “Lee” to stand by his/her side and protect them. But at the same time shine light on “Lees” situation, to “confront what you are afraid of”. Leading us to believe that our protagonist is going through the same situation or has already resolved it somehow.

Here in the third verse we get a little more insight into our protagonists’ head and situation per say. We start of with him doubting his own optimism. Like I said before protagonist believes things will be better in the future but he/she calls the waiting process a “sad game”. Leading us to believe that maybe in his/her mind he/she doesn’t really believe anything will better. Also that living longer then he/she intended (or wanted) is one (or the only) of the highlight of his/her life.

CHORUS

FINAL VERSE
Here the climax and the final wrap up of all the emotions comes to its closing. Now our protagonist is calling for someone to hold him/her. Maybe the same person he/she has been thanking? Maybe God? And one final look into the protagonist, “Paired - off, pawed till I can barley stand it”, showing us that he hasn’t had the best of lives being separated from something/someone and being mistreated and a victim to rudeness and the cruelty of life. And he shines light on another theory or a second part to his future theory; that the future will be ended by a long long sleep. With the way this lines are sung gives a sense of desperation and wanting of that. The wanting of the future to truly end with a long long sleep (presumably death.) And that if it does maybe just maybe or protagonist can finally be at peace. With himself/herself or his/her life. That in death our character finds peace. That in the future everything is well and will be ended by a long long sleep…
