god i love this song, i think it was the first one i heard off rabbit fur coat. it also reminds me of a past relationship, i think it's a very deep and universal subject that it's easy to identify with. But at the same time it's very personal, because when each person listens to the song it has a different meaning for everyone. to me the line "you are what you love and not what loves you back" refers to being selfish, a person being selfishly in love with himself/herself and not in love with his/her couple. to me these are the most meaningful phrases in the song: "To you I'm a symbol or a monument Your rite of passage to fufillment But I'm not yours for the taking" and "A coward who paints a bullshit canvas Things that will never happen to me " |

i love this song so much. It reminds me of Edie Sedgwick's life , how she was so rich but yet unhappy. When she got in the Factory and started hanging with all the cool people and got into drugs. Her relationship with Bob Dylan's friend when deep down it was Bob who she loved. |

for me it's a story about a girl who's kind of a whore i guess, but just because she feels empty and she's not entirely defined as a person. she just does what she thinks will help her fill her emptiness even if she doesn't like it. i absolutely love this song, it's really interesting to read everyone's interpretation. i don't think there's a only one meaning, this is probably what James Mercer wants, to let everyone find their own meaning. |
