morrissey is a genius because he is singing to to us about himself. and, as every smiths fan can tell you, by the end of "louder than bombs" you are completely in love with him, i mean really, more in love with an 80's pop star than you have ever been with anyone/thing in your life. HE IS TELLING YOU THE FUTURE. in rubber ring, he tells you not to forget how much he meant to you when you were a sad, lonely teen. in this song, he is singing about his imminent death.(and the effect it will have on YOU.) i just realized this on the way home tonight. i've never believed in god or an afterlife, but when he sings "there is a better world," I BELIEVED IT. until he whispers "there must be", sounding unsure. i started crying so hard i had to turn toward the window so no one would see me. moz can make so much emotion bubble inside of you with just a flick of his vocal chords. |
