I'm also a fan of the Mark Ronson/Lily Allen version. To me, home in this song is routine, what society expects from you, and even an old self. And being away from home is leaving these old views and expectations and just doing what you want. 1st verse: "Time on your side..." : it's never too late to do what YOU want. "But you work...": you are following the norm, working 9-5 at some pointless job. The chorus: Being away from home, from what you have been socialized to think, you are somewhere more familiar, closer to your true self. 2nd verse: people focus too much on the past and the future (finding a mate, having a family). And not on the present and themselves. 3rd verse: You might get knocked down by leaving your comfort zone and taking the less traveled road, but you'll always get back up on your feet. That's the way I see it as it pertains to my current situation :) |

| I love this song. I think there are many interesting interpretations that were noted. I definitely agree the environmental/evolutionary one. We are exploiting the environment for what we believe is evolution (“take all that you need like my sign says for free, till it's gone! Till it's gone!”), when it is really the prelude to our demise: “Let's shake hands if you want but soon both hands are gone, ha-ha-ha!”, both nature’s and human beings’. When I first heard the song I saw it as a response to a breakup, probably because of my own situation. The first line may refer to his girlfriend cheating on him or just looking for her own pleasure and treating him badly. “If you think you know enough to know you know you've had enough. And if you think you don't you probably will.” probably means she will realize, like him, that they should end their relationship. “Our tails wagged and then fell off, but we just turned back marched into the sea.” makes me think of defeat, like a dog’s tail between its legs, but this is the ultimate defeat, the end of their relationship and marching back into the sea can refer to the metaphorical “fish in the sea”, where they are single once again. The references to his heart beating quickly can obviously allude to his pain. “Take all that you need like my sign says for free, till it's gone! Till it's gone!” could mean she took him for granted. “Drag me out of the sea and then teach me to breathe. Give me forced health till I wish death on myself!” could mean that she showed him what love is, but now that he has seen and been in love, he is miserable. “Well we all stumbled round tangled up in the cords from our phones, V.C.R. and our worldly woes.” could mean they broke up because of her seeking pleasure or material things. I personally think the environmental/evolutionary interpretation is more apropos, but I tend to interpret things based on personal experience. | |
