To me, this song is about a man who's watched all his friends fall into abusive relationships, and because of that, can't form relationships of his own. He sees a girl in a bar, dismisses her as a whore, but finds himself becoming more smitten with her, and has to decide whether or not he likes her. |

Though I agree with the "anti-live-to-the-max" theory, I think there's also a different direction to it (probably already mentioned, I'm too lazy to look through all the comments). I think it's about, hey, live life or not, you still friggin die. On the one side, Tommy gets maimed on a train, someone else becomes a rapist footbal player, holly gets in a gun fight, etc. Then Flipper "dies a natural death" from a virus and Mikey takes a knife from a traffic argument (granted, not entirely innocent, but you can see how it would start small), they die too. Some of them have turbulent pasts (Mikey's facial scar, Bobby's racism) and some of them are very plain (Sharon discussing the topic of disease), but eventually, they all die, the end, thank you and good night. |

This song feels like an eccentric with a dream to me. He seems to have friends with wierd yet sensible ideas (there weren't no point in mowing), and slowly starts to deviate from his community, which seems to be trying to breed backwoods fighters (I heard that your brother was a viking/biker) and form a goal of his own (I'd rather be a sailor than a fighter). |

I think this song is, to some extent, going nowhere. The setting is a combination of thanksgiving and July 4th, two large holidays, but all the girl can do is stab herself with needles and get her body abused in the form of excessive love-making. She finds someone, helps them get into an Ivy-league, then simply mutilates them and flees.
Man, the more I try to think about this song, the less sense it makes. |
