if any of you are fans of the mars volta then you know that within their first two albums they focused heavily on sci-fi themes. this is an early example of the direction that the mars volta would take. It is a venture into the unknown realms of space, a science odyssey. I'm sure that to them it is loosely based off of an acquaintance or something, but it deffinately about a sci-fi story. |

although yes, it could be interpreted as a song of child abuse, it is something of deeper meaning. "The Picket Fence Cartel" is referring to the army of fathers who want thier child to grow up to be a replica of them. The song speaks of the struggle for the child to find himself when all his father will let him be is a copy. The father reinforces this with the belt lashings that hold this child captive until it is his turn. and as bad as he wants to be different he doesnt know any other way which is what is being said in "scotch tape the volume of my mouth
withold the expression
that i wasn't allowed" |

The song is clear in a very unclear manner. It is most likely referring to night time images of a war. The referrences to history are pointing out that those who do not know thier history are doomed to repeat it. Falling flat on its own face isn't speaking of a particular battle but rather any and all wars in general. The "manuscript replica" line is referring to the way that each country or nation controls the flow of informations to its inhabitants and often only tells their side of the story |
