As I came up with for an english project:
The narrator quite simply states that he keeps getting “knocked down, but [he] get[s] up again.” Nothing’s going to “keep [him] down.” Nothing is going to conquer him, he is strong and independent. |

A summary I came up with for a project in my english class:
The narrator has just been bitten by a snake, and as he “feel[s] the snake bite enter [his] veins,” he realizes that he didn’t want to be in that situation, a second thought. He also can’t remember his motive for putting himself in that situation of being bit by this snake. It is not stated whether or not the snake is real or not, I believe that the snake is real in the song, but could also be metaphorical, because he is practicing a voodoo ritual where the snake bites him. As he is there, feeling the venom consume him, he has second thoughts on whether or not he should really be doing the ritual at all, but only to come a bit too late. |

The narrator is falling off the edge [of this hypothetical cliff]. He’s trying to hold on to his security through this immense struggle, thinking that he finally found his own way throughout life, but really all he wanted to do is “try to escape” this falling. He tried to stand strong by “[yelling] back when [he] heard thunder” but this left him with his “one last breath,” the breath of his life. |

This stanza is pretty much the whole song. The song gives you a sense of ‘I’m powerful, I’m confident, I’m strong, watch me!’ “This is dangerous” states that the narrator’s confidence within itself could be dangerous. The battle imagery is used as symbolism to show that just as getting ready for battle, people often get ‘psyched’ up and confident, and this is the same in life, getting psyched for life and preparing for life can be just as exhilarating. The narrator walks through his mind, replacing the word of “mine” with “mind” as if to use it as a pun for this song to show that we are on the ‘battlefield’ of his mind rather than an actual battlefield. If you are dealing with struggles, such as finances, you become a bit more ‘aware’ of your financial status from then on and keep yourself in check, as if you were getting ready for battle, keeping yourself grounded and attentive to areas of your life you would normally not pay attention to. |
