Brand New – Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades Lyrics 17 years ago
In my opinion, this is about a girl and a guy both trying to give each other what they think that the other one wants..
The girl is acting like a slut because she thinks thats what guys like, a girl who is easy and will just have sex with them and then leave them alone, whereas the guy is trying to be how he thinks girls want guys to be, as in love and taking things slowly.
Its obviously his first time, I'm not sure about her, but it could be that shes really experienced (with guys treating her like a whore) or shes really unexperienced (which would be why she would be trying so hard to please like that).

Overall i fucking love this song, so, so much.

The Format – She Doesn't Get It Lyrics 17 years ago
ok, so obviously we have all determined that this song is about casual sex/a one night stand that the protagonist has had, possibly because he thought that it would help him to get over his previous failed relationship (as we all know, this entire album is a kind of "therapy" about Nate's messy divorce.

Here's my opinion on it all,
I'll break it down:

The scene starts at a kind of social outing - I'm going to say its at a bar or a club, somewhere that plays the current "cool" music where all the "scene" myspace kids hang out:
"All the girls pose for the same for pictures,
All the boys got the same girls hair."
Myspace fer sure *LOLZZ*

"And I am bored because I feel much older,
Look at me as if I got a reason to stare."
Our protagonist is feeling quite out of place, as he is not into all that myspace jazz, so therefore feels "older" - not physically, but just in the sense that he is more mature and has a totally different outlook to these other people surrounding him.

"But you talk so loud, that it calms me down.
You're crying, let's make a toast."
Suddenly he spots a girl who also seems out of place at this scene, the way she talks so loudly is making him feel a little less out of place, especially because all of the attention in the room is probably on her, rather than him. This "calms him down".
She's a little crazier than everyone else, and he probably finds her refreshing amongst the sea of clones.

"She says she's leaving on a Sunday,
Oh that leaves me one more night.
Can I take you home?
I know it's wrong, but I know your type."
She's obviously not from around here, and she's leaving on Sunday, so therefore she seems like a safe choice for a one night stand, because he wont have to see her ever again.
He doesn't usually do this kind of thing, but he senses that she probably does and is kind of comforted by the fact that she at least knows what she's doing ^_^

"She says she's leavin on a Sunday,
I don't care I need to know where to turn."
"need to know where to turn" - he is feeling a bit lost after his break up, and he thinks that perhaps having a meaningless sexual relationship with someone will help clear his head and get things into perspective a bit so he can figure out what to do next.
Also he could use it to gauge whether he is truly over the other woman.

"I tried it once, it never caught on,
I was the only one who got burned."
Obviously - he's had a one night stand once before, but it didn't work out for him, he was left feeling a bit crappy. Nevertheless, he decides to go for it, thinking that perhaps this time it might be ok...

"I've read every word you've said,
From a poster of a cat.
Four books look across your sofa,
I thought your coffee table was more clever then that."
Once he gets into her apartment, he realises that his initial perception of her was wrong - that she is just like all of those other boring scene kids at the club.
The poster of a cat line could refer to that poster of the cat hanging from the line thats says "Hang in there!" (I've read every word you've said) - which is obviously something he needs to do ("Don't give up hope!"), or it could just be a motif for how childish she is - with posters of cute kittens and such on her wall, when he thought she was much more mature.
The four books are just the usual boring coffee table reads- whereas he was thinking that perhaps she might have something a bit deeper and intellectual going on.

"It gets worse once we get to her room she stops and she sings "do do do do do do do do"
I claim "New Relgion" is my song,
She doesn't get it,
It's all before she's born."
Now, I don't think this is about an actual age or generation gap, just that she is not as cultured as she appears.
He thought that she was referencing Duran Duran, but she has no idea what he's on about, because she is one of those people who just listen to whats cool at the time.

"And you lock your door,
Like I've been here before.
I feel like I've seen a ghost."
This is a tricky one.
It's possible he's referencing his ex here, especially with the ghost part, as maybe her acting like he's been there before has reminded him of his ex.

"Suddenly between sheets and eyelids, I am reminded why I don't do this.
I fall in love far too quickly,
I never want her to forget me.
When you're gone,
Will you call, will you write?"
This part is him realising that it was a stupid idea - and he should have known from the begining, because he falls in love too easily, and so now he doesn't want her to forget him.
He asks her when she leaves, will she call or write? even though he knows she wont because its all meaningless to her.

I haven't used Nate as the protagonist of the story, because of his comment about this song being about a "fake one night stand", I believe he wrote this song as a therapy session - like playing out what he COULD have done to make himself feel better.. even though he didn't because he knew what would happen - which was exactly what happened in the song.

I LOVE this song, and the whole album. I've noticed that the songs at the start of the album are quite sad, reflective and depressing, whereas the songs towards the end (pretty much after this one) are alot more sarcastic, biting, and empowering.
It's as if he's documented the whole process of getting over this girl into a bunch of songs, with each song showing a different stage that he's at.

I also love the use of church bells in the chorus of this song - wishful thinking? =]

Hope all of that made sense to you guys!!This was my first post =]
